Just being nosey!! - what week are you going to give up work?
I'm looking to do this at either 34 or 35 weeks.
Also, does anyone know what the norm is?

I'm finishing at 35 weeks as well. I figured that as it's my first I just don't know how I'll feel, plus your employer can force you to start your maternity leave at 36 weeks if you are signed off sick anyway.

Plus it'll be summer so I'd rather be lazing around being enormous than having to hump my bump to work every day. Might think differently if I was due in midwinter...

Princesspowersparkle · 04/05/2007 13:33

I'm off at 33 weeks but I have to take 3 weeks holiday, so maternity will actually start at 36 weeks. Only 4 weeks left and counting!!
PPS (29 weeks today!!)

Don't think there is a norm. Depends on your maternity package and finances, I suspect. I only get SMP so gave up last time at 38 weeks and will probably do the same this time. But I was the last person in my 6-person strong antenatal class...

I'm finishing at 35 weeks (only 11 to go yippee!!!) but I'm taking 3 weeks annual leave, so the maternity leave will start in my 39th week.

Bensonbluebird · 04/05/2007 14:02

It entirely depends on your job, I'm 39 weeks and still working, but I am self employed and the buck stops with me. I can work from the comfort of my own home, have a nap if I need one and can fall off my birthing ball without anyone laughing at me (except me)

RGPargy · 04/05/2007 14:13

I plan on giving up when i'm 36 weeks, but it will depend entirely on how i'm feeling at the time!

With DS1 i gave up at 34 weeks, and was very VERY glad to do so!

babysbreath · 04/05/2007 14:21

If I finish work at 34 weeks, this is actually the beginning of my holiday entitlement, so I won't be starting maternity leave until 39 weeks !

I'm aiming to work till 37 weeks. It's my first and it'll be summer, so I suppose there's a chance I will have to stop earlier. I have a 10-minute walk to the office. If I had to take public transport I would definitely be stopping earlier.

Princesspowersparkle · 04/05/2007 14:48

Have to say I'm glad I've got to take my holiday, so I can finish so early- have around a one hr drive each way to and from work everyday- if the traffic is bad this can easily be double. Plus it will be summer- plus I don't have air con. I couldn't cope!! X

RGPargy · 04/05/2007 15:14

I'm glad i'm not going to be at the end of my pg during the summer this time around! I remember how hot and uncomfortable i felt - i dont envy you ladies! (i'm 10+3)

However i do a daily commute on the train (thankfully there's always a seat) so depending on that, it could very well be much earlier when i leave!

Juicylucytoo · 04/05/2007 16:12

38 weeks...and these last 2 weeks are killing me.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 04/05/2007 16:15

Left work at 36 weeks, but I was huuuuge and couldn't cope with getting bus to work and being in crowds.

Think I had a few days holiday to take, so maternity started at 37 weeks I think.

DS1 - tried to work up until I dropped but ended up being sent home with severe tiredness about 3 or 4 weeks before I had him (I was only 17 at the time).

DD1 - was working for a less 'formal' employer part time and she was due in August so I was at home for the summer holidays to look after DS1 who had holidays from playschool. Really enjoyed spending time with him before DD1 came along and getting the house ready.

This time (DD2!) - DH will be working so I need to be at home to have the kids for the summer holidays again. I'm due Sept 22nd but with holiday booked, my last day at work will be JUNE 28th!!!! I'll be 28 weeks gone - can't wait! That's only the end of next month!!!!

At least it gives me a chance to get ready and also spend some much loved time with DC's before the new arrival comes. I'm planning (hoping) to go out for a few days if the weather is nice because we haven't booked a holiday this year. There's a lovely outdoor lido up the road from us so DC's can play in the water while I soak up the sun - perfect!
