Placenta previa??

Hi

I had my 20 week scan yesterday and everything was fine with baby but I was informed I had placentea previa and that my placenta was covering my cervix. Most likely I will need a C section.

I asked what the risks are and sonographer said that as they’ve identified it early it’s fine and I just need to have a c section. Slight chance it could move with growth ofnhferus but that is v unlikely.

But of course I consulted Dr Google and I am reading from countless (trustworthy) sources that this is a very risky pregnancy complication that can lead to sudden onset bleeding. I don’t feel like I was well informed or briefed on the risks with this. Does anyone have experience of this? Did you bleed? A lot of forum posts like this one are met with replied of “oh if usuall moves by week 32” but my sonographer said this is unlikely for me.

Very confused! Should I be worried? Should I be taking things very easy? I am due to go on holiday in April and now thinking I shouldn’t fly?

I had placenta previa I had full coverage and was told it was unlikely to move at all, I did experience some bleeds a bit later in pregnancy and had hospital stays I had a planned section at 39 weeks my placenta doesn't move at all during pregnancy

Lovewinemorethanhusband · 27/02/2018 14:40

We were also told no sex after I had the first bleed I had

Thanks for the reply!

Do you mind me asking how severe the bleeds were? I’m having anxiety about being at home with a toddler and having a heavy bleed or even hemorrhage ...my mind is switching to worst case scenarios.

They didn’t say complete coverage so I’m not sure if that it’s the case or not. She was quite casual about it!

I had it 9 years ago - 20 week scan low lying (and most do move remember that). 32 scan was assuming it would be the same but no still very low lying. Book in 38 weeks c section and out she came (9 next week).

I was completely asymptomatic - so no bleeding etc. As such I did nothing differently. For me I just had a c section and needed to have blood taken so blood was on standby if I needed a transfusion

WelshMammy123 · 27/02/2018 15:48

Hi. I had it with my dd. Placenta did eventually move enough to allow a vaginal birth although I ended up having an emergency c-section. I didn't have any bleeding in that pregnancy.

I have the same thing again this time round and this time more of my cervix is covered. Sonographer said they would scan again at 32 weeks to see if it's moved. She also said that I'm at a risk of bleeding. Told to go straight to triage if that happens.

Try not to worry - I think that whilst the risk of bleeding is higher it's doesn't mean it will definitely happen. I asked about whether I needed to take things easy etc and was told no more so than anyone else.

FranticallyPeaceful · 27/02/2018 16:00

Mine is low lying, so not completely covering it. I’ve been told there’s chance of it moving upwards but they’re going to let me know at 31/32 weeks in a scan

Squashpocket · 27/02/2018 16:10

A friend had the same - complete placenta previa, told no chance it would move at the scan and it didn't. She had a couple of small bleeds in the 3rd trimester and then a slightly larger one at 36 weeks. They admitted her in to hospital and said she had to stay until the planned c-section at 39 weeks. In the end they moved the c-section forward to 37 weeks, but I don't know the details of why that was. Anyway, both mum and baby are absolutely fine. She was monitored heavily throughout the 3rd trimester. Best of luck.

I had my baby 3 weeks ago by emergency c section due to complete placenta previa. Apparently what happened to me is very common - small bleed just after 36 weeks (called a herald bleed) so they kept me in hospital; a few days later the early stages of labour started followed by a bigger bleed and emergency c section less than 30 minutes later! All was well!

I found the whole experience really stressful but ultimately it was fine. Main thing is that they spotted it, so now they will look after you!

I had my 20 wk last wk as well. They said it’s low lying or even possibly covering at this point but were very blase - said that as the uterus grows in the second half of the pregnancy a lot can change and chances are it will right itself.

Hi user1499031722 - i am 24 weeks and have complete placenta previa too. Have had since 12 week scan and it hasnt budged an inch - just sitting right at the bottom like a cup!
I havent had any bleeding either to date - but also have a toddler and a full time job so I'm starting to feel nervous about picking him up, commuting into London etc
I'm hoping we are both in the lucky basket of not having any bleeding at all - or not til right at the end when the baby can be born without issue anyway.
I've stopped looking at google now as i was scaring myself. Trying to take it easy and enjoy my pregnancy (as its probably my last one). I have a scan next week with the consultant (as I'm so very old at 41 (!) i get more scans anyway) so i will quiz him on what the deal is and post any info i get for you to see too!

RaindropsOnRoses2 · 02/03/2018 13:30

There are different grades of previa - it should say in your notes that they print out at the scan. I had grade 2 and my notes said 'leading edge of placenta reaching o/s'. Different trusts have different rules but mine had to be 3cm or more away from my cervix to allow a vaginal birth. At my 36 week scan it was 5cm's away.

I knew another pregnant lady at the same time and she was put on pelvic rest once they discovered it as she had complete coverage. She had a planned c section and everything was fine. The only thing was she wasn't allowed go into labour naturally so they were on edge from about 37 weeks. If she had gone into labour they would have done an EMCS straight away.

BlytheofWindyWillows · 02/03/2018 13:37

I had a complete previa and experienced a little bleeding at 28 weeks. Went to hospital that night and was kept in on bed rest until DD was born at 33 weeks by EMCS. She spent 3 and a half weeks in the SCBU and is thriving. My advice would be to rest when you can, easier said than done I know. Any questions just ask.

flippityfloppity · 03/03/2018 14:27

I have a complete/grade 4 previa. I'm 32 weeks and only recently had my first very small bleed.

They'll be doing a c section before 36 weeks but I also have other complications.

Many women don't bleed at all and can get to 39 weeks no probs.

No sex, no heavy lifting, and just take it easy where you can. It does often move for many women - even grade 4.

I'll be having an mri next week as they are concerned about accreta which is quite serious but that's usually when you've had ++surgery

There are support groups on Facebook if you search - but as lovely as they are I have to say they've made me quite neurotic!
