Hi just found out at a scan last week that I am expecting twins. I was having some bleeding so was sent for an early scan. I am about 7 weeks.

Any advice in how twin pregnancies are, what to expect etc, I am still trying to get my head round it all. I don't even think I believe it yet! Please I need to hear from mumsnetters who are going through the same thing or have done, please please

I will send the medal I always think Mums of twins should get! Congratulations

Chandra · 02/08/2004 10:13

No twins here sorry, but it won't be long before somebody appears with more info (I know there is people here who have had three in a go).

throough out my pregnancy and until the day of the first scan I wanted to have twins, you only need to go through pregnancy once! and they come with a best friend included as a package!. I think is great! Congratulations!!!

Flossam · 02/08/2004 10:50

Congratulations Aku - I expect you are still in shock! I have non-identical twin girls who are now three and a half. Great that you found out so early - I didn't know until 16 weeks. Had my suspicions though because I looked full term at that stage!!

My pregnancy was quite trouble-free - the hospital freaked me out when they wrote "high risk" right across my notes in big black letters but I suppose it is of slightly more concern than a single pregnancy. You'll have loads and loads of scans, just to check that they are both growing well and developing properly - I think I had about 10 in all, even though there were no problems. I had a caesarean because twin 1 was transverse and didn't have enough room to move round as her sister was squashing her. I knew a few weeks in advance when the date would be and they were delivered at 37 weeks - I believe this is considered "full term" for twins. They were a great weight - 6lb 2oz and 6lb 15oz and they went straight with me to the ward, didn't need any special care or anything. Had them on the Thursday and was home on the Sunday. Then all the fun started!!

I believe my DH has been far more involved than he perhaps would have been if we had only had the one baby. Because there were two he had to muck in and soon became an expert at changing, feeding, winding .... everything really. It was hard work to begin with and pretty exhausting - but the benefits of having two together soon outweigh the negatives. They are incredibly close now and to see them running into nursery together hand in hand lifts your spirits on even the gloomiest day.

aku, Congratulations on your news, my advice is get plenty of rest and be prepared...be very prepared.... my twins are now 13 years but their brother was only 16mths old when they were born, very hard work but worth it all in the long run. I was six months gone when I found out it was twins so you have no excuse not to be ready, they do have a tendancy to come early.

throckenholt · 02/08/2004 11:20

Hi - I have 18 month old identical boys.

You need to find out if you have identical or fraternal twins - it makes a difference to the risk levels and the amount of monitoring.

Fraternals you probably have a bit more monitoring than with a single, but not much.

Identicals can have more problems and you should have scans every couple of weeks from about 16 weeks.

Basically it is much more tiring to carry twins, you normally can't work so long, and often they are born a bit earlier - probably no danger og being induced at 42 weeks .

Wander over to the forum page on www.twinsclub.co.uk - everyone there has twins or more - you will get a lot of support there.

Thomcat · 02/08/2004 11:26

Wohhhooo, wow, congratulations!

aku · 02/08/2004 11:26

Thanks everyone! I am still in a daze. I have not done a stroke of work since I got in this morning. I am waiting for my boss o come in as I have asked her to. I want to tell her as it will make it real, whatever happens I will like her to know so she does'nt think I have gone mad. I keep not hearing what people are saying to me I am so preoccupied.

Congrats. My non identical twin girls are 5 now. It's great they always have someone to play with. Mine were early at 33 weeks but are perfect. If I could back and have them separately or as twins I would choose twins every time! Be prepared for every trip out to take at least three times as long as you expect because so many people will stop to talk.

daisy1999 · 02/08/2004 11:37

aku have you any children already?

aku · 02/08/2004 12:57

yes daisy1999, I have a daughter aged 5

I just have the two but I bet your 5yr old will be excited and lots of help(?).

beansprout · 02/08/2004 13:44

Congratulations Aku - just carrying the one here, so can't offer any experience, but best of luck with everything!!

Hulababy · 02/08/2004 13:47

Congratulations!

jampot · 02/08/2004 14:01

Congrats - being a twin myself just one word of advice - don't refer to them as "the twins" aaarghghhh and don't let anyone else do it either.

BTW - we were 3 days overdue

Nimme · 02/08/2004 14:13

Congratulations aku!!!

Jimjams on the December thread is expecting twins - perhaps butt in there and say hello to her (although I'm sure she'll find you.)

Many congratulations again - great news.

tinyganghq · 02/08/2004 14:18

Many congratulations aku!! My B/G twins are now 2.5 yrs and the shock hasn't worn off yet - I still can't quite belive I did that! My older dd was 3 yrs when they were born (she's now 5) and has been fantastic with them. They follow her around like a personal fan club - and to think I was worried she would feel pushed out.

Pregnancy went to 37 weeks and I had them naturally as they were both head down. Lots of checkups and scans. They were good weights 5lb 9 and 5lb 10 but I did feel quite huge towards the end. Make sure you get LOTS of rest - you'll get extra tired, especially as you are working. Hope you don't get too sicky, it can be worse with twins and I was unwell for some time with it but it doesn't happen to everyone.

It can be useful to discover the sexes later on if you don't mind knowing and the hospital will tell you. It can help you prepare (clothes etc) and also help your other little girl adjust too.

Good luck. Take care. Hooray!

aku · 02/08/2004 14:41

Hi again all, another question - did anybody get bleeding early on when expecting their babies. I have had some on and off for about a week now.

helenmc · 02/08/2004 17:56

hiya aku, my girls are now 7 - and the shock STILL hasn't warn off. Must admit can't remember a lot about pregnancy, expect I had a 42in waist and was induced at 39 weeks. There was a very good thread on what do I REALLY need to buy for twins, if you have a search through the archives. And there are quite a few other twin mums her as well as a triplets Mum (haven't see you name for ages - are you ok?)
Have to go now as Twin I is badgering me for the pc so she can play bubblegum club or someit. Feel free to e-mail.

clairabelle · 02/08/2004 18:05

Congratulations on your pregnancy, hope all is well. aku I think we talked earlier in the year about a local meet up.Are you still in Kenilworth? If so there's loads of twins about, 3 lots starting school with dd in sept at St Augustines and also a little girl with twin( v young) siblings I'm sure they'll be a local group. Can try and find out if you like. Have you had a booking visit from a midwife yet, will you be going to Warwick and if so which consultant?

hana · 02/08/2004 21:24

congrats to you Aku! Fabulous news!! Smellymelly is also expecting twins in early Jan late Dec - she is on her honeymoon I think, but I'm sure she'll get back to you once she sees this!
A friend had twins last Dec and she also bleed off and on, esp during the first 12 weeks. Both twins are fine now. Hope you enjoy your pregnancy

Nimme · 03/08/2004 08:46

Aku - sorry Hana is quite right. It is Smellymelly who is expecting twins and not Jimjams (sorry Jimjams)

Ghosty · 03/08/2004 09:25

Doh ... Nimme ... LOL ... I just emailed Jimjams to say "WHAT'S THIS ABOUT TWINS???"
Better email her back ...
