Does anyone know if co-codamol is safe during pregnancy? I have severe tooth ache (can't get into the dentist any time soon) I had some co-codamol yesterday as was in so much pain but is it safe? Many thanks

I’ve been prescribed it by my doctor from 4 weeks, and he said it’s safe.

Thank you, it's not the strongest stuff as it's the over the counter one but just wanted to make sure it was safe as the sheet that came with it didn't say

With my 2nd pregnancy I suffered horrific headaches and was given cocodamol in the hospital for a week but in the end it made me hallucinate and feel worse. Never touched it again but everyone's different 😊

I’m on 30/500 mg which I think is the strongest. I can take 2 at a time but because of how drowsy they make me I tend to only take 1 at a time.

Yes although I would advise you seek advice from your own gp before taking it. I was on it continually the strongest co codomol available as well as morphine throughout my pregnancy for various issues sometimes this was in IV form as well.
The only risk I was told about was that baby can become dependant and suffer withdrawal. I tried my best to only take it when I really couldn't cope otherwise and I weaned it down with medical help in the lead up to giving birth and baby was born fine. I'm sure on a one off it's fine to take and will do no harm but if it's more regular you do need to be doing it under medical supervision

Try some clove oil from the chemist and get an emergency appointment asap. Btw - it's horrible tasting but rub it in and it works.

Yes but speak to your GP first, which is what I did. I recently had to have it prescribed (I'm 39 weeks pregnant now) and I wanted to be sure I was taking the right dosage. I was given the minimal dosage and it still made me feel a bit high and dizzy when I first took it so I'm glad I knew I was ok to have it as I would have really worried if I'd taken it off my own back.

Also, even though I was prescribed it by the GP, the pharmacist almost didn't give it to me when she saw I was pregnant. I had to assure her I had literally just been given the prescription 10 mins previously by my Dr but she was extremely hesitant.

I was prescribed it around 28wks but I think there was a suggestion you shouldn't take it near the end...as others said check with your GP/Pharmacist

Iv taken codeine and paracetamol in this pregnancy earlier on when I hurt my back, they told me it’s completely safe in earlier pregnancy (before the last few weeks) as it can make the baby sleepy and lousy. But it needs to be prescribed by a gp

Pickledgerkingsareathing · 26/02/2018 17:48

Midwife says no untill doctor has prescribed x

FranticallyPeaceful · 26/02/2018 17:50

It’s absolutely fine. No adverse affects unless you’re right next to your due date. Don’t let yourself be in pain

BoofayTheOompaLoompaSlayer · 26/02/2018 18:15

Doctor and midwife told me to take cocodamol 8mg/500mg for PGP/SPD pain.

MeadowHay · 26/02/2018 19:27

I took the OTC strength ones on two separate occasions in first trimester when I had migraines. The first time I got the go ahead from out-of-hours GP. So I would generally say yes but I would get advice from your GP first.

KochabRising · 26/02/2018 19:30

Yes, with the following caveats:

Even low dose codeine can be addictive. Take it for as little time as possible

It’s mixed with paracetamol - do not exceed the recommended dose of paracetamol

Not recommended nearer the end of pregnancy.

I would definitely ask GP

Doctor and midwife told me to take cocodamol 8mg/500mg

This is the same dose I was prescribed by my GP at 38 weeks pregnant.
