40 week sweep fail

Hi,

Just wondered if anyone could cheer me up.

I'm 40 weeks and had a failed sweep today, midwife could feel the baby's head very quickly but said cervix was too far back to do the sweep, she said to not expect him any time soon. She's booked me another one next week.

I know he will come when he's ready and I know it's normal for first baby's to come late but I feel like I could just burst into tears I have felt quite anxious throughout the pregnancy anyway and I just feel really disheartened,

Wondered if anyone had a similar experience?

Thanx

Sorry to hear you're fed up OP, I felt just like you did! I went for a sweep at 40+1 but the midwife refused to do it because my baby girl was still so high up - I went home and cried all evening!
Went back for another the week after and thankfully that one worked. I know waiting another week isn't fun to hear and feels about a year away (I remember the feeling very well!), just keep in mind that he WILL be here soon. Flowers

If it makes you feel any better, my friend had a sweep at 40 +3and also left disheartened and frustrated as the midwife couldn't reach anything and told her she'd definitely be having an induction. Baby wasn't engaged either, the next day her waters broke, baby engaged and appeared seven hours later. So, it doesn't always mean you've got ages yet.

Snap! I'm due to be induced tomorrow (I'm 40+4 today) and had a midwife appointment booked for today anyway, was offered a sweep and really wanted to have one to try to get things moving, alas my cervix is high up, quite far back and still completely closed. 😔 Induction it is then! Fingers crossed the Propess works and isn't too savage.

Hope your labour starts naturally soon Op....let us know how you get on. Xxx

My midwife also told me she felt the head at my sweep but that baby wasn't coming anytime soon too!
I was 41 weeks and that was on the Thursday, baby was here and well by Saturday 8pm! She's now 9 weeks!
This bit is so frustrating for you but it will happen and it will be soon! Good luck Smile

My mw tried to give me a sweep when I was 41w5d with #4, but couldn't.
I had a show the next morning and went into labour naturally early evening. He was born after a 2.5hr labour at home in a pool.

I was told at 40+8 after a sweep nothing was happening and booked in for induction. 24 hours later baby had arrived.
I have had the disappointment and crying only to have baby next day fingers crossed

lanebaby · 22/02/2018 10:22

Ahhh congratulations! Thanks

I didn't end up getting induced as they felt there wasn't an obvious clinical need to do so (foetal movements fine, heart trace fine, my urine and BP were fine etc) so they discharged me. They booked me in another induction date next Tuesday as a back up, and told me to go back to the midwife for another attempted sweep in a few days. Just got back now. Sweep failed, cervix still rammed shut, now 7 days overdue. Midwife says based on the state of my cervix she doubts I will commence labour naturally on my own and expects I will "need a little help".

Now feeling thoroughly miserable and once again resigned to having a horrid shitty induced labour. 😢

Rockandrollwithit · 22/02/2018 14:30

Don't get too down hearted.

I had a sweep at 9 days overdue with my first, the midwife couldn't even complete it as my cervix was too high and unfavourable. I got the "nothing will happen soon" speech, which was worrying at 9 days overdue.

I went into labour naturally the next day and DS was born the day after. Things can change really quickly.
