Does anyone know how early in pregnancy I should change how I sleep? I prefer to sleep on my front but have been feeling uncomfortable that way over the last few nights. I'm only 6+4 wks - should I be on my side already?

I didn't think you had to be on your side until you were past 20 weeks or so, but I guess it's down to individuals. If you're uncomfortable then perhaps try your side.

Thanks MrsMar - just sleeping badly generally so maybe that's why I feel uncomfortable on my stomach. Or the gas, of course!

That's ok. I bought one of those V shaped cushions yesterday and I've found it really comfy. I was using a pillow but I found that too bulky, and the V shape is perfect. I have the V bit between my legs and the front bit supports my bump and the back bit supports my back. Only £15 in Debenhams, well worth it!

You must be much further than me - I have no bump to support yet (getting embarrassingly plump already though!).

I'm 20 weeks today, but I've had trouble sleeping since the start. Lots of that was due to the ridiculous number of times I had to get up to go to the loo in the night, but some of that was also due to changing ligaments and muscles I guess. Uncomfortable hips and pelvis being the main culprits.

gingertoo · 02/05/2007 12:32

I'm 31 weeks and sleep on my side with 2 pillows under my head, 1 under my bump, 1 between my knees and 1 between my ankles!!!!!I'm really comfy - honest! I wake in the morning under a big pile of pillows and duvet and my DH says that its like tackling an army assault course to get to me but at least I get off to sleep ok! So get practicing with those cushions ladies!!!

MrsMar · 02/05/2007 12:37

Crikey gingertoo, do you have a nightmare rearranging everything each time you go to the loo? I've already tripped over the selection of pillows I was using once or twice!

gingertoo · 02/05/2007 12:42

Yes, absolute nightmare!!!!! Can't seem to get comfy tho if I don't get into that position!!!!! As you can imagine, DH thinks it is wonderful that I am doing 'cushion arranging' at 1am, 2.30am, 4am etc etc etc.......

MrsMar · 02/05/2007 12:42

LOL!!!! Oh the things we go through! :O

MrsBadger · 02/05/2007 17:01

much better than pillows etc is the single duvet off the spare bed rolled into a sausage (on the non-DH side) - supports all the bits, doesn't fall out of bed and is bendy enough to tuck bits between knees, ankles etc.

fleacircus · 02/05/2007 17:03

Good idea, Mrs B, hadn't thought of it. Thanks for that.

Please can you just confirm that it is okay to sleep on your front until 20 weeks? I've always slept on my front and am finding it really hard to stop - even if I fall asleep on my side, I seem to wake up on my front. I've got one of those funny pillows and am hoping that by 20 weeks (am 17 weeks now) the bump will make sleeping on the front impractical, but would value reassurance that I'm not doing any damage sleeping on my front for the time being.

Princesspowersparkle · 02/05/2007 17:23

Hi Pinkdelight- Its OK to sleep on your front until you feel uncomfy not to. I asked my MW about this as its my position of choice and she said there are no probs with sleeping on your front- just as you get bigger you'll prob get uncomfy. I ended up having to stop at 17 weeks cos it wasn't working for me, but sometimes even now I'm half on my side and half on my front with a pillow supporting!

Thanks so much - will sleep easier knowing that.

beckmo · 02/05/2007 21:09

I'm the same with the cushions.

It's like a barricade betwen me and DH. Maybe subconcious to stop him getting me in this state again....

Single duvet will be added tonight.

tokentotty · 02/05/2007 21:11

Is sleeping on your back a big no-no ?

tokentotty · 03/05/2007 10:08

Bump - anyone ?

mistresstara · 03/05/2007 10:34

sleeping on your back is not recommended in later pregnancy as it squashes the blood vessels, try to sleep on your left side if you can as this is the recovery postion so hence better for your blood flow!

tokentotty · 03/05/2007 11:22

Thank you ! Just seems that no matter what I do I wake up lying on my back.

MKG · 03/05/2007 11:26

Sleep? what's that? At 36 weeks I'm too busy going to the bathroom every 20 minutes to sleep.

tokentotty · 03/05/2007 11:36

Excellent point MKG.... That's the reason I know I always end up lying on my back because I wake up like it so often in the night to go to the toilet !

Ohhhh...I just cannot WAIT to be able to sleep on my front again.

Thinking of making big bump shaped hole in mattress. It would be worth it.
