Do newborn babies always look like their daddies?

Is this a myth or not? I have known a few babies who were identical to their fathers (both my nieces were) at birth and grew up to look more like their mothers later in life. But it could have just been me imagining it. In 20 weeks time am I going to see a red and crumpled version of my dh?? Would love to know if this is true, I did hear it was to ensure fathers bonded better with their babies.

You hear all sorts. I have read that it's a matter of evolution. Babies look like their Dads so the genetic link is obvious (you're fairly sure if you're the mother I would imagine ). Therefore, the Dad won't run off and bang other women over the head with his club as he can see his responsibilities in his child's looks. However, read yesterday that all babies look the same and we're only projecting looks onto them.

Due in 2 weeks and I can only hope that this poor baby resembles DH and not me.

I heard that too SoH. All the babies I've ever come across do seem to look like their dads (including one with a big black unibrow...) but that does seem to change as they get older.

Or maybe it's because all men are just like babies?

No.

My dd's both looked like their dad as newborns.

And they still do!

vimfuego · 02/05/2007 12:12

All babies look like Winston Churchill.

MrsMar · 02/05/2007 12:13

That's freaky floating, although my niece did as a baby look a bit like my dad (not at new born stage though, at a few months old)

vimfuego! Either that or Winston Churchill looked like a big cigar smoking baby!

DD was DH's double when she was born, strangers used to say to us, you can see who's her daddy. Now she's a mix of both, she has his eyes which are quite distinctive but the rest of her features are very petite like me, she doesn't have my double chin tho' (yet evil Mummy). Hoping the next one is the same cos I have little piggy eyes which don't work very well either so she lucked out I think.

lazyemma · 02/05/2007 14:05

Our daughter doesn't look like either of us at the moment (she's two weeks old), so on the basis of my experience: no.

flightattendant · 02/05/2007 14:11

Oh God I really hope not. DS now 3 has always looked like his father from the start, mainly the facial expressions (daddy used to drink a lot and when inebriated he and DS were identical)
The father this time is someone I do not wish to be reminded of while allowing access to my bosoms!!! Could be tricky if there's a grand similarity...

Not at newborn stage - DD looked like one of her adult cousins (one I don't like, great for bonding!). Then when she was about 2 months she turned into a mini-DH, and she's stayed looking like him since, which is sweet.

Hassled · 02/05/2007 18:06

Yes, yes, yes and yes - all 4 of mine looked like their respective fathers at birth and now don't especially, and I'd never really thought about it before now - how bizarre is that?

Oh dear God I hope not! For the child's sake alone I hope that she looks like me and not my exp when I meet her in 3 weeks! Doesn't bare thinking about.

Mind my cousins two dd's both looked like their dad at birth and for the first couple of months, but then grew out of it and are both stunning versions of my cousin now.

DS was v like DH at birth, much commented on by all hospital staff, freinds and family. He still looks very like him, though my side is showing through more now - not necessarily like me, but definitely my side of the family.

rabbleraiser · 02/05/2007 19:24

My ds looked just like his father as a newborn. Now he's the perfect amalgam of both of us. OK ... scrap the 'perfect' bit.

Idreamofdaleks · 02/05/2007 19:25

Yes.

They all look like either their dad or the milkman

colditz · 02/05/2007 19:26

dS2 LOOKED JUST LIKE MY DAD

firsttimemama · 02/05/2007 19:28

my dd did -but she's got some of my features now at 11 months.

BibiThree · 02/05/2007 19:28

DD looked like DH's BROTHER - now THAT was weird for all concerned! She was the spit of dh until she got to about 6 months then changed intot he beautiful little darling she is now - like me of course.

rantinghousewife · 02/05/2007 19:32

Never thought of this before but now you mention it, dd was the spit of dh, so much so that the midwife actually said, "There's no mistaking this childs paternity, is there". Mind you, she's 4 now and still looks like him. They are very strong featured in his family, anyway, large eyes, full mouths etc.

lucy5 · 02/05/2007 19:33

My two did but they have grown out of it

rantinghousewife · 02/05/2007 19:36

Ds looked so much like exp when he was born, my friend looked at him, rolled her eyes and said "Don't you look like your dad, never mind there's always plastic surgery"

Flamesparrow · 02/05/2007 19:38

Both of mine were the image of their dad... DD grew out of it about the end of last summer, DS is still very much a miniDH
