So I've taken 2 sainsburys pregnant tests one 3 days ago and another this morning.
It's meant to be a cross in the circle if pregnant... There's the thick line going across but then faint line going down. I don't know if this is a positive or not?
Please help X

Have you told them you've been on the pill - were you on it when you conceived? As I think there can be a higher chance for ectopic pregnancy, so they might want to scan you just to rule that out. But normally you need to wait until 5 weeks to see anything on a scan.

Megh2296 · 22/02/2018 20:02

Yes told them I've been on this pill , yes this is what I'm worried about X

Thank you I've been tossing and turning all night can't think straight! Just can't understand why I'm getting that on tests and my blood work being different xx

@Megh2296 I could have written this post. The Sainsbury's tests seem to be much more sensitive than FRER or any other pink dye tests I had. I had a super faint positive with Sainsbury's test then negatives on all other tests for about a week. I also got bloods done (for a non-pregnancy reason) and didn't come back saying I was pregnant either! I've not had an early scan due to bleeding and all is well 7 weeks ish with a heartbeat. So hang on in there I'd say test in another week

How frustrating! Did you get the actual number from the blood test?

What did they say when you showed them the tests??

Backenette · 23/02/2018 18:12

Do you take any prescription drugs OP?

Backenette · 23/02/2018 18:17

I’m trying to think of mechanisms where this can happen...

Some prescription drugs can give you a false positive on some types of HPT.
Different labs use different cut offs for a positive result - for example 10 iu/25iu. If you were just given a yes/no then if it was below the threshold and the lab uses 25 as a cut off then it’s possible that there is beta hcg, it is rising but it’s still below the cut off. If you’re also using a 10iu HPT strip hen in that scenario you could expect negative bloods positive HPT 🤔

So frustrating for you but it’s really a case of waiting just now. If you are pregnant, the hcg will continue to rise. Keep taking a irons test and go back next week for another set of bloods if they are positive

Megh2296 · 23/02/2018 18:24

No I don't take any prescription drugs
They were 4.5 I think X

Megh2296 · 23/02/2018 18:25

She said that to get a positive urine test my blood should be 25iu however not all tests are 25
I feel like I'm seeing lines in the tests now as everyone is telling me I'm not pregnant X

OP posts:
Backenette · 23/02/2018 18:41

That is generally considered negative. 5 and below mIU/ml is negative, 5-25 is a maybe and 25+ is generally seen as a positive.

So your bloods really are negative - what could be causing the positive urine tests? You’re not leaving them too long I assume? After ten mins or so you can see lines due to evaporation sometimes.

I’m not a medic, just a scientist but the following possibilities are all I can think of.

  1. You are pregnant and You have some kind of interfering antibody to HCG in your blood and that’s messing with the lab test.
  2. You are pregnant and there’s been a lab error. It’s rare, but it happens.
  3. You are very much only just pregnant in which case wait a week and test again
  4. The HCG is coming from another source. Remember the tests measure hcg - it’s not a direct look at whether you’re pregnant only to see if that hormone is present.
*You’re not taking any drugs that could give a false positive. * some pituitary tumours (which are usually VERY slow growing and very common and very easy to sort out so don’t panic!) can release hcg (but again you’d expect it in your blood too..)
  1. You have had a chemical pregnancy.

So that's me out of suggestions! I can only wish you luck. It’s quite baffling.

Backenette · 23/02/2018 18:43

No you’re not imagining the lines. They are there. The question is why the bloods are negative but the urine is positive. The chances of getting multiple false positives in different brands is so low as to be discountable. There is either HCG in your urine or something that’s givjng false positives. Some drugs can do that, leavingvtests too long can but neither of those apply.

You’re a medical mystery!!

Megh2296 · 23/02/2018 18:49

I literally think I would be 13 days if I was.
I don't take any medication.
However it won't show up on a clear blue, I would understand if it was just 1 test but it's not its several which have been bought from different shops, X

I had a misscarriage last year at 6 weeks so know the signs and symptoms of that and I don't have those X

OP posts:
Megh2296 · 23/02/2018 18:52

I do have a B12 deficiency but I don't think that would cause it not too show up in my bloods?

And no not leaving the tests after correct amount of time xx

OP posts:
Megh2296 · 23/02/2018 19:23

I just don't know what to think

OP posts:
Backenette · 23/02/2018 19:25

Well if you think you’re 13 days that is still early - only time is going to tell on this one!

choccybiscuit · 23/02/2018 19:40

Just wanted to say, take folic acid now just in case you are x

slithytove · 23/02/2018 21:28

I think you probably are and the home tests are more sensitive than the blood test.

When I was pregnant and going through this the docs said they wouldn’t even blood test as they aren’t as sensitive.

Some of those pink dye ones test 10 miu

Megh2296 · 23/02/2018 21:48

Thank you
They seem certain as that's 2 sets of bloods that have come back at 4.5
I just feel like I'm going mad,
But surely those lines wouldn't be there as faint as they are if not X
