So today I’m panicking
But don’t want to google!
They say the 20 week scan is a health check, although obv most want to find out the gender too!!
But now I’m like so what if there is something found? What normally shows up at 20 weeks?
Anyone heard of anyone having issues at 20 week scan?!
I’m so down today sorry :( x

It's normal to be nervous! I was. I don't know anyone who had bad news. They check all the organs and only at the end will they tell you the gender. They asked me at the beginning what I though the scan was. I said anomaly scan. They said good as people normally say to find out the sex so they do like to check you understand that's not what the scan is for, it's just an added bonus.....if they can tell

I was always nervous before my scans. I never understand the excitement and "ooh, I get to find out the sex" but may be that's because I know several people who have had issues at the 20 week scan, some minor, some serious and some turned out to be fine and just a bad picture. But worrying won't change the outcome.

I'm not sure hearing about other people receiving bad news at 20 weeks is going to make you feel any better.

Suffice to say they check your babies organs, limbs, face, blood flow etc at 30 weeks. So if you get the all clear, like most do, you can start chilling out.

I had mine yesterday and I have to say, I was not excited for it. I wasn't nervous like I was for my 12 week because I could feel baby moving and so on, so I had a feeling that at least baby was still alive in me (which was my big concern with the 12 week one).

On the other hand, my OH was really nervous and did not enjoy it at all, whereas, he had enjoyed the 12 week one and was not really anxious about it.

I think it is also a bit boring because it's all measurements and checking that all the organs and bones/limbs etc are in place and so on, so I found it less interactive somehow. The sonographer did tell me what she was doing so I could understand what I was seeing and it was lovely to see baby again of course.

I did want to find out the gender and chose to do that. It was quite nice because as it as at the end it was a good note to leave on.

I personally don't know anyone who has had issues show up at their 20 week scan. Regardless, things that can show up at problems with the major organs like the heart, the bladder, stomach and so on as well as the limbs and spine. The growth is measured again and charted. If something shows up as potentially abnormal, you are informed by the sonographer. As far as I understand, you would be referred to a consultant at that point and they take it from there.

Oh asking on a parenting forum about what people have heard at 20weeks scans is just as bad as googling this is a terrible idea.

Most of the time it's fine, some times it can be terrible heartbreaking news.

Get off the internet and have a nice bath and concentrate on relaxing, this is just the start of parenting stress it's not like all the worries melt away when you get to hold your baby, you just get new worries....
