I had a sweet at 8 days over and the next day my dd was born. I don't know if it was the sweep or if Labour was just imminent. Best of luck won't be too long now

cherryontopp · 01/02/2018 10:37

I hope they work!

Im due one a week tomorrow Grin

TheInimitableMrsFanshawe · 01/02/2018 10:48

Two babies, 6-8 sweeps in total. Not one worked. I was about to say no harm trying but, in my case, each one set off my irritable uterus especially in my last pregnancy so, on reflection I wouldn’t recommend.

faitheloise · 01/02/2018 10:49

Is it painful? 😞.. i hope he comes on his own i dont want to be induced

I would describe it as uncomfortable more than painful.

LastOneDancing · 01/02/2018 10:56

I had a sweep... waters broke 45 minutes later.

It's not painful but it's uncomfortable, particularly if they're really going for it.

nornironlady · 01/02/2018 10:57

I had at least 4 and for the last one the midwife asked if I was ok for her 'to really go for it'! Despite saying yes it did nothing to bring on my labour. They are uncomfortable for obvious reasons, I had a bit of a dull ache after but bearable. I did thankfully start naturally the day before I was booked in to be induced. I was dreading that more.

GMtoBe · 01/02/2018 11:19

I had 4/5 (5th was on induction ward and I had to ask the midwife to stop because I was too sore by that point after a failed pessary) in total and they got progressively more uncomfortable. None worked for me and I was induced with a drip in the end but I have a friend who went into labour a couple of hours after her first sweep. I think it depends on lots of different of factors as to how successful it is.

Waitingonasmile · 01/02/2018 11:21

I had one at 39 weeks and it wasn't painful at all. It's a surprising feeling but it wasn't sore. It also didn't work!

ThorsMistress · 01/02/2018 11:26

I had 2 with DS. The first one was on a Monday and the second on a Thursday. He was born Friday!

On my second sweep she said not to hold out much hope and I would most likely have to be induced!

nolurkynolighty · 01/02/2018 11:35

there's not really a scientific way to know if they work or if labour would have started on its own.
that being said i had 2 sweeps with my last pregnancy and i too was searching the internet for positive stories so.... the first time it prompted period-like pains but nothing more. the second time a different midwife was not shy of really REALLY going for it (even my partner noticed this!) and labour started suddenly several hours later. went from feeling nothing to having very regular strong contractions and had to ignore the hospital's "wait and see" advice. the baby was born just a few hours later, no complications.

cornishmumtobe · 01/02/2018 11:37

I hope they work!, just had 1 half an hour ago!

WhataboutBarb · 01/02/2018 11:39

I had a sweep on my due date with my second child. He was born 6 hours later ! Not sure if I had been in slow labour anyway (had back pain) but it definitely helped things along. Good luck

ElfEars · 01/02/2018 11:40

I had sweep at 38+5 done by my consultant in hospital. Sweep was at 4pm. I had period type pain on way home from hospital. In proper labour by 11pm. Back at hospital by about 2.30 and DS born at 6.12am. It was uncomfortable but bearable.

Kraggle · 01/02/2018 11:41

I had two with overdue dd1, they did naff all.

Was persuaded to have one with dd2 to make me more favourable for my early induction, didn’t think it would do a thing as I was 38+2.
Sweep Thursday evening, mucus plug lost Friday evening, waters bulging Sunday morning, popped Sunday afternoon, induced and baby born Monday evening after contractions failed to start.

faitheloise · 01/02/2018 12:02

Different for everyone isnt it, i really hope it works for me iv had enough now, i went into labour naturally and suddenly with my Daughter she was 6 days late, was due to get a sweep on the day she was born.

I had one when I was 6 days over.Had it at about 3pm and contractions started early hours of the next morning.
Good Luck.

AdidasGirl · 01/02/2018 13:25

And it wasn't painful..

Sarahh2014 · 01/02/2018 13:48

I had 4 and still had to be induced at 40+8

RosieCotton · 01/02/2018 14:10

With my first I had a sweep at 40weeks. I'd rather walk on nails than do it again. I have hypermobilty in my hip so my hip popped out of place, I was 3cms when I had my sweep which I didn't know. Labour started 3 hours later, took a while from there but for me the sweep aggravated things enough to get moving lol

MrsPan · 01/02/2018 18:43

On sweep number 3 today 40+9 and booked for induction tomorrow.
It’s made me feel quite achy each time like my period is coming but never built to anything. The first 2 weren’t painful just a little uncomfortable. The last one was very painful but that might have been because my SPD is terrible today. Good luck! X

cornishmumtobe · 03/02/2018 11:16

Update: 48 hours post sweep and no movement Sad

MrsPan · 03/02/2018 13:12

Oh dear- maybe next time. I don’t know if it was the sweep but the 3rd one was very painful - I had it at 10.30am and went into labour later that evening. Good luck!!

PutDownThatLaptop · 03/02/2018 13:14

I had one at 41 weeks plus 5 days. The baby was born 5 hours later.

linz84 · 03/02/2018 13:19

I had a sweep at 7 days over and my daughter came at 9 days over.
