Low BMI

hi has anyone else been in this position. I am 16 weeks today. Had a midwife appt yesterday and she had mentioned my bmi is 18 and that is considered low and I should have been having extra appts/scans with consultant but I hadn’t heard anything so she has arranged an appt for 3 weeks time but just wondered if anyone else has been in this position and know what will happen at appt with consultant?

My BMI was 17 when I fell pregnant and was referred for extra growth scans (I’m 29 weeks now).

I don’t know if it varies where you live but for me, I literally just got a letter for a growth scan after my 20 week scan, for 26 weeks. I went for the scan and spoke with a midwife about the results after. My results showed a small baby but one within normal range (10th centile) and following the normal curve so therefore was told I didn’t necessarily need anymore tests unless my bump measurement dropped off at my midwife appointments. However, I automatically received another growth scan letter for when I’ll be 34 weeks and I’m assuming the same consultation afterwards will happen. Other than this, no one has so much as mentioned my BMI and no one seems remotely concerned about either me or the baby. I’ve never seen a consultant and I’m not classed as being under consultant-led care. It’s been nice having extra scans to check on baby though and get an idea of what kind of size he is.

As I say though, I don’t know if it varies where you live so it could be different for you.

That’s great thanks. My midwife wasn’t very forthcoming with information and just made an appt with consultant for 3 weeks time so I wasn’t sure if I’d get a scan then or if was just to go thru things. She mentioned something about 28 and 32 weeks so maybe that’s when extra scans will happen! Hopefully all will be ok and just an extra bonus getting to see baby a few extra times ☺️

Mine wasn’t either and no one has been since! Nobody really seems to know what’s going on to be honest - ha! But like you say, nice having extra scans and as long as mum and baby are healthy, that’s all that matters Smile

Strange isn’t it! I thought would be more hands on but midwifes haven’t even examined me yet, just all info on computers and blood tests! Anyway thank you, nice to speak to someone who has been thru the same thing xx

Yeah they’ve never even weighed me again since my first appointment at 8 weeks! I figure if they’re really concerned they’ll do something. I don’t know about you but for me, I’ve always been small but have always eaten healthily (and a lot!) so I know I’m not underweight through any fault of my own and I guess they can tell that maybe? I don’t know. Sorry, I feel like I’ve been no help! But you’re right, you’re the first person I’ve spoken to who has been referred for low BMI so it’s nice to know you’re not alone!

I didn’t feel I was that small, I know I’m not big but I didn’t think I’d be considered low bmi. I eat an awful lot too lol maybe not as healthy as I’d like to but definitely a lot! Oh no you’ve been great, much more than midwife explained lol and it’s just been nice as I’ve not known anyone else in this situation and now I know what to expect

I had this with my first pregnancy, my bmi was also 18. The midwife made a consultant appointment without even telling me, I only found out about it when I had a letter with another date and a bit saying I should have called if I couldn't make the appointment. I had two extra growth scans as my bump always measured small too, after the second I was signed off consultant and back to midwife led care.
