Found out at 16 weeks - midwife

I found out that I was pregnant when I was already 16 weeks gone. Saw Midwife on Wedneday 24th Jan. She didn't really do anything. Not sure what I was expecting. She told me it could be up to 4 weeks wait for a scan.

She arranged to come to my house Saturday 27th January and still nothing. I had a letter that morning to say the scan was booked for 14th Feb. When she came she told me that that was the absolute earliest despite how far gone I was and was also told that if I am correct with my dates, I will be too late to be tested for Downs Sydrome as the cut off is 18 weeks. Does this sound right? I thought that they would have rushed it along given my age also 36. She hasn't taken blood or anything, she has just said the next time I see her now will be 20 weeks.

Downs testing is normally at 20 weeks. Other than filling in the long paper work, blood test for blood group and maybe blood pressure. I don’t think I had any other tests at that point.

Downs screening is done at 12 weeks not 20. They can't see the NT measurement if it's too late. You can get a NIPT like harmony or panorama privately if you are worried.

Sorry OP. I must have misremembered.

How do you know you are 16 weeks if you did not know you were pregnant earlier? Have you had a scan?

Buxbaum · 30/01/2018 12:19

You're too late for the combined test (bloods and nuchal translucency) but you can have (and should be offered) the quadruple blood test to screen for Down's and spina bifida up to 22+6, but ideally before 20 weeks. I would call and clarify this.

Thanks for the replies. Because I could be and was convinced there was something wrong with me. I finanally got the courage to book a doctors appointment and did a test the night before as I didn't want to look like an idiot to them as I thought that that would be the first thing they would ask me. I did two first response tests and they were glaring posititves. I know when I would have conceived as that was the last time I had sex with partner due to various reasons and that time would have been the 7th October.

I did mention having a scan done privately but she told me that I could but none of the private clinics would do the tests that go along with it.
