Hi all. I got a bfp on weds and am exactly 4 weeks today... and although I researched ttc thoroughly (it took a while ) I know NOTHING about being pregnant!

  1. Is it safe to get my hair highlighted? I have an appointment next weekend but have read conflicting info online.
  2. Is iceskating safe this early on? I take weekly figure skating lessons. I have never fallen over until last week and it really shook me. I know it would be stupid to skate a bit later but what about this early?Should I stop now or when?
  3. Is laser quest safe? I'm supposed be doing it for my birthday (an outdoor one in the woods) but I'll be 12 weeks then. Again - read conflicting information online.

If anyone has any answers that would he great! I reeeally don't want to jeopardize this pregnancy AT ALL! Thanks :)

Getting hair coloured/highlighted isn't advised due to the ammonia used. That said my sil had her hair dyed blonde throughout 4 pregnancies with no problems so it's personal choice as to whether you do. I dyed my hair while pregnant but wasn't lightening it and used ammonia free dye. It may be best to discuss with the colourist and see what they suggest.

I personally wouldn't ice skate while pregnant at any stage, many things can go wrong in pregnancy and I wouldn't want the added "what if I hadn't gone skating". Before your bump 'pops' (ie you can feel the bump above the pelvis, usually around 12 weeks) the baby is pretty well protected by your pelvis but for me it wouldn't be worth the risk.

I did laser quest while pregnant, but it was inside so no climbing or trip hazards. You should be fine as long as you watch where you're going. The laser itself won't do any harm, neither will the vest, the risk comes from tripping and falling. I'd just be careful and go slower than I normally would.

As with most things in pregnancy it's about weighing up the risks for you personally and whether it's an acceptable risk. I happily ate rare steak, as long as the outside was completely browned, but my sil wouldn't touch it while pregnant.

Have you started taking folic acid?

Highlights and hair dye are fine.

Thanks very much for the info. I'm going to have a good think about the hair thing as it seems ambigious. The ice skating is a shame but in my heart I think I knew that would be the answer!

I'm a hairdresser and highlights are fine, no colour touches the scalp, the only colour I'm wary doing in pregnancy is full head bleach

Re hair dye, I was so surprised when I heard it the first time! I'm Spanish and there no one has ever heard that dying your hair while pregnant might be a problem, my doctor said maybe it was 20 years ago when the products used where much stronger! I've been dying my hair from week 1 and I'm not worried at all :)

Falling over in the first trimester doesn't risk the pregnancy, as it's still tucked well inside the pelvis. So your probably be fine to carry on ice-skating for a while if you felt comfortable to, but if you feel very worried about it it's certainly OK to stop.

I waited until 12 weeks for highlights; my hairdresser said it’d be fine earlier but in the end I just felt more comfortable waiting

Mrstobe90 · 30/01/2018 00:47

I had my hair dyed and highlighted when I was around 5 weeks pregnant and it was fine. My baby is due in just under 3 weeks.

At this stage, baby is so deep in the pelvis that ice skating is probably ok but I wouldn't risk it.

I'm sure laser quest is fine though xx

Hair dye and laser quest are fine. Like everyone else, I’ve skating is probably fine too but I wouldn’t risk it.

Thanks all - lots to think carefully about x
