How long does miscarriage take?

Firstly I know it’s a daft question because I’m sure it’s different for everyone.

Emotions aside because I knew weeks ago after an early scan. Last week on Monday I started bleeding. Scan at hospital Tuesday confirmed mmc. Booked in Friday for managed miscarriage with pills but bleeding increased through week, discomfort increased and in the middle of Thursday night woke up with the proper cramps and contractions and (sorry TMI) passed all the important bits over a couple of hours.

Went to hospital on Friday for another scan and doctor chat. Chose not to take the pills and let nature take its course to pass the rest.

Monday now and still bleeding obviously and still got discomfort.

I know I’ve just got to let it run it’s course and I’ll call the hospital if it gets too heavy or if I have any infection symptoms.

It’s curiosity really as to what people’s experiences are and how long an average miscarriage usually takes. Just to manage my own patience levels!

Thanks x

My experience is only have a d&c but I can't imagine it's too different than a natural mc. I had a mmc last year and though we waited 6 weeks for it to happen on it's own and it didn't, so I went in for a d&c (was advised against medical management). Even with the sac and everything surgically removed, I continued to bleed fairly heavily for a full week. 6 days after I had really heavy bleeding and cramps and passed some clots. And then after that it started to settle down and was maybe spotting for a few more days. So heavy bleeding, soreness, occasional cramping for 7 days plus maybe 3 extra days after of spotting before it stopped. I'm sure that's different from a natural miscarriage, but I have definitely heard of people bleeding for 7-14 days after, so I would assume what you're experiencing is pretty normal unfortunately. Hopefully the worst of it is over and you will start to feel a bit better soon.

My experience was very similar to yours. After the ‘main event’ passing, I had pretty much normal period bleeding for about a week or so after

Sorry you’re going through it btw. It’s utterly shit. But we conceived easily again after and had a very healthy DS. Hope it’s over soon!

I had about a week of bleeding with a natural miscarriage. Had a scan after 2 days and another a week later by which time I think the bleeding had stopped. All my pregnancy symptoms disappeared after a really heavy days bleeding.

Thanks for you, it's shit.

Thanks all, pretty much what I thought. Through the worst of it, just can’t wait to be done with sanitary pads, they are the work of the devil (seriously, I’m in awe of women who use them regularly, the buggers don’t stay where they’re supposed to and don’t stick to anything they’re meant to, only the bits you don’t want them to stick to - last thing I need right now is an accidental bikini wax!)
