How can I avoid catching a cold from my husband? Third trimester and hugely important work presentation this week!

I know the answer... hand washing, hygiene, that's about it!

Has anyone managed to NOT catch a cold from someone they lived with in the third trimester? Presentation extremely important to my career and questions will be very tough, will be expected to be on the ball etc so hard enough without being an absolute mess!

Take loads of vitamin C (1000-1500mg a day), the max dose of zinc, and I would also take echinacea daily. It's a bit inconclusive if echinacea is safe in pregnancy. There is no research to show it's not safe, but there has been little research and only one significant study. That study showed it was perfectly safe though, even among women using it in first trimester. I'm 36 weeks and I've taken it in 3rd trimester (along with the above) when I was starting to get a cold. Vague symptoms lasted a day and then I felt great. I've used this pretty much since my dd was born (she's 5) and often can manage to avoid colds she and my dh bring home.

It's mostly what he does that matters. Vit C etc are not fully scientifically proven.

So tell your DH to wash his hands after blowing his nose of coughing into them. He should try to cough into tissues and bin them immediately. No kissing!

And for you, don't put your hands to your mouth without washing first.

Don’t sleep in the same bed and generally don’t glface him when talkingGrin

Phones and keyboards are the dirtiest things in most places so dont share, wipe everything and wash hands frequently.

Basic barrier nursing.
Wash hands, disposable hankies etc.

Thing is with colds is your probably already exposed and nothing you can do apart from treat the symptoms.

Good luck with presentations and if u get the cold feel free to share it!

VIcks First Defence or the Boots equivalent. Safe to take while pg.

Potteryprincess30 · 21/01/2018 09:52

@Justanotherzombie this is 100% the best advice. My mother is a nurse and says exactly the same thing. I stuck to this (also in my 3rd trimester at 34 weeks) and funnily enough had a presentation too last week.

I managed to avoid his lurg completely by following those simple rules (though constantly nagging him to was his hand was a little irritating!).

Also no kissing ! Grin

Don't take herbal remedies or high doses of vitamins. Normally it would be ok but not while pregnant. Taking high doses of Vit C is an old wives method for inducing miscarriage. Stick to washing hands regularly, not kissing and avoiding contact.

Put some homey in water and leave overnight, and in the morning ass juice from half a lemon and drink 30 minutes before the first meal. Boosts our immunity like nothing else! Honey has amazing properties, and leaving it in water overnight makes it even more powerful.

Justanotherzombie · 21/01/2018 13:59

That's what my immunity has been missing! Ass juice.

Do other people know about this yet?

rainysundaymorning · 21/01/2018 19:34

Thanks for the tips! Glad to hear someone in same situation has managed to avoid! Also curious about as Ass Juice

Bit frustrated as he kept saying he wasn't unwell and I couldn't catch it so isn't really making any effort re hand washing etc, but has now admitted he feels really unwell

I'm starting to feel really unsympathetic nagging him so just given up as I expect too late now anyway

Fingers crossed. Normally I wouldn't care but it's just I need to be 100% this week

What’s an ASS Juice? Shock

Justanotherzombie · 22/01/2018 14:09

Ass juice! You know. That stuff you leave out under a full moon so it's chemical properties change into anti-wrinkle elixir.

Seriously, leaving honey 'out' overnight will do nothing to enhance its magic. Honey before it's bottled is out every night.

KittyKK · 22/01/2018 14:19

Take vitamin C, sleep in different beds, use different bathrooms (if possible) and maybe both use the hand sanitiser. Hope you stay well OP!

zaalitje · 22/01/2018 16:41

As mentioned before be careful with high dose vital C, it's an old wives tale way to induce miscarriage, not sure if disproved. However any high dose of vitamin should be avoided in pregnancy, check the back of soluble vitamin packs, it'll say no for use in pregnancy.
