Early scans

Hi everyone, I’m 8+2 according to my LMP. I have my booking in appt on 29th jan.
I am just looking for advice on whether or not it’s a waste of money on booking a private early scan. I haven’t had many symptoms, I guess I can say that I’m symptomless.
Any advice on whether your early scans were worth it or if waiting is better?

We got an early scan at 6 weeks. Although the baby doesn’t look like a baby that early just seeing the flicker of the heartbeat made it all worth while for us. I didn’t get symptoms till after 10 weeks. I’d definitely say go for it!

Fuzzyduck21 · 18/01/2018 14:41

If you can afford it i would say it's definitely worth it. I've done it twice now and was invaluable to know all was well as I couldn't wait till 12 wks! I am an anxious person tho x

Fuzzyduck21 · 18/01/2018 14:42

Ps I went around 8 wks too x

I’m conflicted because it’s my first baby and I am very anxious to know it is alright. But I’m just wondering if it will harm the baby before it’s mostly developed at 12 weeks

Personally I wouldn't. I had an way scan at 7 weeks due to spotting. Everything was good and we saw the heart beat. I then had a miscarriage the day before my 12 week scan. In hindsight I wish I had never had the false hope of the early scan.
But everyone is different.

We had an early scan at 8+6 just before Christmas, so that we knew everything was ok and could tell some close family over Christmas. £40 and well worth it - reassuring to see a heartbeat and confirm the pregnancy was viable at that stage. Just had my 12 week scan yesterday and everything still going perfectly.

MagicFajita · 18/01/2018 15:01

It's not a waste of money if that's how you wish to spend it.

We had a scan at 8 weeks and saw a blob with a heartbeat , we love that tiny , blurry picture!

Because of a previous loss we wanted to enjoy that pregnancy from start to finish. That early scan was worth every penny for us.

Thing is, it’s important to me but my oh is all about saving as much money as we can for the baby. A month doesn’t sound long but 30 days seems so long

Its not a waste of money if it helps you worry less between now and your 12 weeks scan. I had a NHS scan at 7 weeks and then we booked a private scan at 10 weeks. I was under no illusion that the scan does not guarantee anything, however, for us it was worth every penny. I knew that no matter what happened I had a little photo to keep forever (which is something I never got to have with my last pregnancy).

Gem173 · 18/01/2018 18:00

@ForeverHopeful21 that is exactly right. That’s how I feel, that no matter what happens we have a photo of the one we loved and lost. (Touchwood it doesn’t happen) but the gesture makes complete sense x

It’s worth as much as you want or need one. For me it gave me a sense of peace. I know you can get them for £49 in some places which isn’t too much?

Gem173 · 18/01/2018 20:54

@hannknitted is this your first child? :) I’m glad everything’s working out for you and it’s all going well

I’ve got one booked for 28th Feb.
I’ll be 10 weeks.
Fully aware it’s going to the the longest 6 weeks of my life!

Remember getting my first scan letter through last time & sobbing because it felt so far away, that was 14 weeks.

Vap0 · 18/01/2018 22:28

I’m all for early scans
After you see a heartbeat the baby has much better chances for survival
Sorry to those who have seen a heartbeat and they have not made it
I’ve had 2 early mc and 1 baby, I’m pregnant again and have a scan a week on sat 6+5 , I’ve been waiting since I found out at 3+0 to have this scan and it has felt like forever.
I understand the need to save money but early scans can really help get you through the waiting.
You mentioned whether it would damage the baby, no, they don’t damage the baby at all.
Best of luck.

We had an early scan at 10 weeks so we could surprise our families at Christmas. We were amazed at how much we could see. It was a fantastic experience. There were no diagnostics but all the staff are NHS trained and would let you know if you need to contact at Dr asap. We've got a lovely DVD, with photos. It was worth every penny. Hope all goes well for you Smile

Shmithecat · 18/01/2018 22:49

I had one at 5+4 (dildo cam). Saw a little flickering bean. Best feeling ever! Tbh, it didn't stop me panicking about the viability of the pregnancy - nothing can at that stage - but it helped me actually take in the fact I was actually pregnant.

Gem173 · 19/01/2018 07:11

Thankyou for your responses, they have all helped me get my point across to my oh and have reassured me x Goodluck to you all on your pregnancy x
