Vits and nutrients?

Since having 2 bouts of flu, a cold, and a bad viral infection in the first 3 months of pregnancy I am finding myself feeling very burnt out.
I am now 14 weeks and I still don't feel 100%, unfortunately with bad nausea and occasional sickness I am also struggling to eat all the things I should be eating!

I just wondered if there are any other vitamins or nutrients I can take other than my vit D the midwife advised? I have also thought of juice plus as maybe something to add in during the day? (NOT to replace meals with!)
I think my main issue is with all the illness over the first part of my pregnancy I am really struggling to feel myself, I feel dreadful all the time and very unhealthy so I think I need a bit of a boost.

I am going to of course speak to my midwife about this but I just wondered if anyone else has found anything that may help?

Thank you in advance Smile

If you are struggling to eat much/a balanced diet a general pregnancy multivitamin wouldn't hurt. You could add Spatone as a gentle iron supplement to support your iron levels. Juice Plus would cost you a hell of a lot more for essentially the same thing.

Rest, drink lots of water, take a multivitamin. Hopefully you'll feel better soon.

Thank you. My midwife told me to just take vitamin D after 12 so I've been worried to take anything else, but I know I am lacking as I am so run down!
If the multivitamin has vitamin D in it would I stop my vitamin D supplement I assume?

Yes, no need to double up.
Your midwife is arguably right in that there's no evidence multivitamins do anything helpful compared to a decently balanced diet, but if you are struggling to eat and feel very run down they certainly can't hurt and may well make you feel better. I also became slightly anaemic around the 12 week mark and felt much better for starting to take Spatone.

You can take most multi-vitamins throughout pregnancy. If you're worried though you could opt for pregnancy specific vitamins such as Pregnacare or Seven Seas Pregnancy etc. They can be taken all the way through.

Thank you for the replies! I honestly do just think I need a bit of a boost, I feel so run down and just feel like I need something to help pick me up a bit. I'm really struggling to pull myself through at the moment and still feel rubbish 24/7.

I'm just worried about taking anything other than what the midwife said!
I took pregnacare at the beginning for the first 12 weeks for the folic acid then stopped and switched to vit D, would it be worth switching from vit D to pregnacare as long as that has vit D in it?

I'm 27 weeks and have taken Pregnacare all the way through, mainly because my health and diet hasn't been as good as it usually is.
I think all the pregnancy vitamins have vitamin D in them - but just check the pack when buying.

QueenAravisOfArchenland · 15/01/2018 16:07

Don't worry about it. Midwife only mentioned what there is proof there is BENEFIT to taking, i.e. folic acid and vitamin D. That's a sensible attitude for a medical professional to take because it stops people feeling pressured that they MUST fork out on Pregnacare. That's not the same as there being any harm or risk in taking a general multivitamin, and if you are struggling to eat or already a little anaemic it could well do good.

Thank you, il definitely switch to pregnacare and see if that helps give me a bit of a boost.

I am putting it down to the awful bouts of illness I seem to have had most of the way through so far, I think it's just run me down to be honest and I am fed up of feeling rubbish now! I know it must be that what has caused a lot of it as i didn't even have any symptoms before that, now I seem to have every symptom under the sun and haven't yet felt human in about 8 weeks! Envy

I was taking only vitamin D but I've now switched to a pregnancy multivit just so that I have everything covered. Tesco do their own brand pregnancy vit, and as far as I can see it's very similar if not the same as pregnacare and it's cheaper :)

Thanks @HoneyBee92 I've sent my partner to go get me some so hopefully that helps!!

You know I think there’s quite a lot to taking the pregnancy vitamins. I got a load of pregnacare max on 3 for 2 from boots when I first got my bfp. They’ve just run out, I’m 17+1 today, and in the 5 days I’ve not been taking them I really have felt more run down and tired!
Maybe it’s placebo effect but I honestly think it’s made a difference so I’m going to go and stock up on more tomorrow I think. It does say on the box you can take them throughout the whole pregnancy, even though I know you don’t really need to, so I reckon I’ll just do that if it keeps me feeling more human!

I really hope you don’t get any more bugs and have chance to recover/take care of yourself and bump :) xx

Eggoispreggo · 15/01/2018 22:30

Oh! Also I’ve not been ill at all, all pregnancy so far, and I work in a school so normally have at least one bug a month! All hail the pregnancy vit! Even if they do look like tablets made for horses and taste like soil Grin

0310Star · 16/01/2018 09:02

@Eggoispreggo that's good to hear! This year the bugs just seem to be lingering, my partner never gets ill and even he has had a cold for almost 2 weeks now and stocked up on multivitamins for himself as he can't seem to shift it!
I'm kind of at a point where il try anything lol
