12 week scan - large ovarian cyst

Hi all, had my scan yesterday and everything babywise was just as it should be - thank God! But they found a large ovarian cyst with thick walls and debris. They then kept using medical terms and I don't really understand. I'm so confused and scared about it as I hope to God it's not cancer :(

You need to go back and talk to someone until you understand your diagnosis and what treatment is advised (both during and after pregnancy)

are you booked for further tests?

Did they just let you go like that without a plan?

One of the sonographers said I will be referred on to a specialist and then she did an internal scan with her senior manager who said for now they I'll just check it again at the 20week scan. Hoping it will shrink but it's driving me mad the thought of it!

I'm not sure if it's the same op but I also have a cyst on my right ovary (a large one that no one misses) they have told me it's just a simple cyst and not to worry about it. They found it 3 years ago in my first pregnancy and said it wouldn't affect the baby etc. This time being pregnant and at a better hospital they have just advised me that it could burst or it could twist my ovary which both will cause pain, but so far so good!
If you are worried then speak to your GP for reassurance xx

I had one last year that they found when scanning me as I'd miscarried. They basically (Which sounds like they have done for you) send you away and then scan you in a couple of months.. Which explains why they mentioned the 20 week scan. Majority go of their own accord (mine didnt) so if they find at the next scan that it is still there or has grown then they will probably recommend surgery. It's a simple day op procedure (or was for me) but I suspect they'll ask you to wait until after you've given birth. I was told if I conceived again while waiting for the operation it was fine to still have the surgery but more for myself they'd rather I'd wait to ttc until after they'd removed the cyst. I hope this helps! They normally do blood tests too to check it isn't cancer.

@Bownsy hello I am just wondering how you got on with your pregnancy and cyst as I am in a similar situation myself. Thanks

Hello! It was actually never followed up with after my pregnancy and completely forgotten about. I was pregnant again with my second child last year and at the scan they found another cyst on that side, but it was very small and simple - the one they found in my first pregnancy had completely disappeared on it's own! :) Both my pregnancies were very straightforward and both my boys were born at home with not even a scratch on me, so it didn't affect it at all.

All the best with you!
