Hello,

Pregnant with baby no3. 1st dc was emergency c section, extremely traumatic. 2nd dc was elective due to previous birth experience.

When I give birth this time, my last c section will of been almost 7 years ago.

I was told by my consultant in my 2nd pregnancy that any future children would automatically be a c section.

Part of my really wants a natural birth this time however I know there is possible dangers involved. Is it worth me even asking to try? Or will it be an automatic c section? Thanks x

I looked at this recently as I had EMCS then sort of elective in that I didn’t go into active labour. There is literature out there and anecdotal stories of people attempting and being successful. Stats I found were American and although said c-section comes with more risks than VBA2C my concern is that stats could be skewed by hospitals not giving patients much choice so there are fewer VBA2C to compare to third, fourth etc. sections.

I mentioned to my midwife the other day as I am over an hour from the hospital and have two wee ones so will need to wait 1.5 hours for someone to collect me and then hour to get to hospital so what if baby is well on its way out, she said all going good you’d be having a VBA2C but otherwise they won’t let you...I do not have medical reasons why I should have another section, well maybe sort of, but they clearly are not into considering this at all unless circumstances dictate.

My long winded point, and from reading other stories on here, is you will need a medical professional to support you in this and then it is an option. I would suggest agreeing terms in advance for your notes, something like you wish to try labouring for x amount of time before section and agree you will consider section at any point should it be medically imperative so they are more likely to support you and then take it from there on the day. I would make sure your birthing partner is clear of your wishes too so you are not having to make these decisions at the time when you are otherwise engaged!

@InappropriateUsername thank you so much for that, I still have a long long way to go so I have plenty of time to think about it yet.

That's really helpful advice, thank you x

Yes. A VBA2C is possible. Aslong as you ask for it. I had 2 previous c sections and this time round I was adamant I wanted VBA2C I asked consultant on my first appointment with him and he said it was fine and he would support me. The risk of uterine rupture is 1.7% with 2 or more c sections but after my last c section I had terrible infections and almost 11weeks to heal. I didn't want to do that again.
