Bloated in early pregnancy

I am 5.5 weeks pregnant. It is my second pregnancy. I look about 4 months pregnant as my tummy is so swollen! Having done some internet research I think it is quite normal - constipation / wind etc, charming, so I am not too worried about it. Has anyone discovered how to ease this bloatedness please?

Romanee,

Bloating and wind is my worst complaint about this pregnancy. I could cope with vomiting, feeling faint and mind-numbing fatigue but I cannot tolerate feeling bloated/windy.

I looked into it and it is entirely normal - the hormones which sustain pregnancy in the first trimester cause the gut to slow down and that's why you end up feeling bloated/windy and constipated. I took Rennie Deflatine (on the advice of my doctor - please check with GP before doing so) and it really eased it.

I also ensure that I have a bowl of All-bran everyday to keep things moving.

It does get better on its own in the second trimester...

You poor thing; in my first trimester I kept having to run off to find discrete places to fart!

I had the most AWFUL constipation as well, which has never bothered me since. I completely changed my diet to a minimum of the 5 bits of F&V a day and made sure I was drinking approx 1.5l of water. I cut out tea and coffee anyway as it made me feel a bit sick. All this did the trick, but it took a couple of weeks.

Also, if you are taking a vitamin supplement with iron - this can cause constipation. Iron is formulated as Ferrous sulphate, but if you can get hold of ferrous gluconate it apparently is gentler on the bowel (there was a thread called Hb and home birth in the childbirth section).

Hope you get it sorted!

i'm the same. i'm 8+4 and by the end of the day i'm very bloated (have a real farting problem - really embarrassing but at least it confines itself to the evening/morning when i'm at home and my husband can laugh at me!)
