Eat the pepperoni if you want it. It's be preserved within an inch of its life.

There's actually nothing you can't eat. Just guidelines. So I'd advise understanding the whys of the guidelines so you can make your own decisions.

I don’t think you’re supposed to eat them during pregnancy but I craved them with my first DC and ate quite a few. It didn’t do me or DC any harm... It killed my vegetarianism though (I hadn’t eaten meat in 13 years but after that first pepperami I couldn’t stop )

DearShirt · 10/01/2018 15:29

Why aren't you supposed to eat them?

Buxbaum · 10/01/2018 15:33

In some countries the advice is not to eat deli meats like salami. That is not the official advice in the UK. Have your peperami, OP.

DearShirt · 10/01/2018 15:40

I would have thought it's got so many preservatives in it there is literally no risk.

OP I suggest you read up on NHS direct regarding food recommendations, or you're going to have a crappy and non delicious few months.

DaisyLand · 10/01/2018 15:47

if you cook it then it's fine, i've it on pizzas and so but not out of the packet. Same with any other cured meats. This is to avoid Toxoplasmosis

Hulaballoo · 10/01/2018 16:13

@DearShirt I've read the NHS guidelines but theres no clear answer. The meat is pasteurised but still only cured so not cooked fully. I'm happily eating lots of things including runny eggs and seafood 😁

Cook it. Then it'll be fine. Also, the risk is listeria and you'd no as soon as opening the package whether it looked dodgy. Listeria would be slimy on the surface of the meat so it would look and smell off.

Peanutty86 · 10/01/2018 17:58

Oh @Hulaballoo it's you!
Peperami is safe!!
It's actually made in Germany and sold under the name Bifi there. There's a lot on german forums about it and people have even written to the manufacturer and they have confirmed it's fine to eat. I was craving it so bad in my early weeks of pregnancy I must have had about 50!

pastabest · 10/01/2018 18:04

It's fine to eat as is, but if your really bothered you could always freeze it first

Hulaballoo · 11/01/2018 07:34

Thanks all, hey @Peanutty86 I didn't know they'd written in and that's required it was ok. Good to know. Hadnt thought @pastabest to freeze it too, good idea, thank you?
