Toxoplasmosis and soil in indoor plant pot

I took out the stake holding up my orchid as I wanted to replace it with a taller one.

I brushed a bit of the soil off and replaced the stake, then washed my hands twice thoroughly afterwards as I have some (probably over-anxious) fears about toxoplasmosis. I know this wasn't an outdoor plant, and the soil was from an indoor plant that has been kept indoors since it was bought... but what do you think that the chances of getting anything like toxoplasmosis are from this? I have my 16w midwife appointment on Wednesday in a couple of days, and I can predict her looking bemused if I ask her the question then...

I'm fairly sure I'm worrying over nothing and that it is v low risk with this sort of thing, but I stll can't help wondering. Hmm

I really wouldn't worry. There's so many things you worry about when pregnant. I once ate a yoghurt 2 days out of date and then worried lol 🙈. I think the chances are very small! I had an indoor cat while pregnant although my partner used to clean the litter tray while I was pregnant, I was absolutely fine. As long as you've washed your hands I think youll be fine

You are definitely worrying over nothing (I mean that in a nice way). You’ll be absolutely fine x

I think it's fairly safe to say the chances of you getting toxoplasmosis from that plant if it's always been indoors is zero. You'll be absolutely fine.

Even if it was contaminated soil, you'd have to have ingested it. Eaten it. Did you eat the soil?

NooNooHead · 08/01/2018 15:59

Ha ha! No, I didn’t put my hands anywhere near my mouth! I am such a worry wart! 😖😂

To be honest, i’m actually more worried about a bit of salad that I ate out at a garden centre restaurant yesterday... the chances of them not washing it well are higher than the fact I picked up a stake from an indoor plant! ConfusedHmm

This was my life for first 6 months of pregnancy. I was obsessed with rinsing things and would avoid salad and fruit that I hadn't washed myself. I am less worried now as I've been having CBT but there's pretty much nothing I don't know about toxoplasmosis. I have read so many academic papers on it and I really now understand how you can get it. Feel free to ask any questions.

Toxoplasmosis is from cat poo. So unless you have a cat that's using your orchid as a toilet, there is zero chance of catching toxoplasmosis.
