I know this has been talked about here many times before but...I've just sent a Silvercross 3D pram back to Mothercare as it was too big and bulky and too hard to fold up. Now out of options and becoming obsessed I live in a small basement flat with stairs to the outside world, will be using London transport BUT also love the idea of having a pram for when bambino is small. Thinking of having to go the expensive bugaboo route but really don't want to be ripped off...any helpful comments/ advice/ ideas...Thanks!

If the 3d was too bulky any prammy pram will be - and the Bugaboo is even bigger.
Get a Techno, a decent sling and a moses basket.

beckmo · 25/04/2007 14:44

Is the bugaboo even bigger?I thought it weighted less. They seem a pain to fold down too especially with the flight of stairs I'll be negotiating. Been looking at the techno and considering it.....thanks.

I've got a MacClaren Techno and it is great. Not too heavy, folds up very easily. It is compact enough to fit in the boot of my corsa. Also, I love the fact that once it is folded you can still wheel it one handed as the brake doesn't automatically go on when the pram is folded up.

EdieMcredie · 25/04/2007 14:48

We are getting a britax trekker. Cheap, safe, small when folded and looks nice.

MrsBadger · 25/04/2007 14:53

ah, weight and size are different animals - the 3D folds with the seat still on, but the Bugaboo you have to take off the seat before folding the chassis and store it seperately, as well as storing the carrycot somewhere.
And folding the Bug to get on a bus just isn't feasible...

I thought the Trekker was pretty big, and doesn't make a pram like the 3D anyway. No point having a travel system with carseat if no car either, nor much point having a 3wheelevr in London...

beckmo · 25/04/2007 14:54

Did you use your Technos from birth? I think I'm going to have to give up on my idea of a forward facing pram....anyone tried the micralite with carry cot?

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 25/04/2007 14:54

ooh, Edie, there's a namecall thread for you here

MrsBadger · 25/04/2007 14:55

oh, now the Micralite is agood idea.

beckmo · 25/04/2007 14:58

Mrs Badger -I think the trekker is too big too and those 3 wheelers will never get up my stairs. Problem with the 3D is that it is really hard to fold down in the pram mode with liner in and I'm sure it is heavier than it states. Which is a shame as otherwise I think it is lovely...
We do have a car but I'm not mad on using a car set in the pram/pushchair anyway.
I have to be a big girl and make a decision and stick to it. Will look at the technos tommorow in Motehrcare.

I've never tried the micralite, but it does sound a good idea. The only reason I didn't buy one was because you couldn't attatch a buggy board.

RedFraggle · 25/04/2007 14:59

The techno is suitable from birth but I had a travel system which I used initially. Only got the techno when we went on holiday. i wish I'd got it sooner though as it is great!

beckmo · 25/04/2007 15:00

Oohh...the micralite! Is it??I thought it might be too good to be true...Tell me please!
How on earth do you know about so many pushchairs!?

OP posts:
RedFraggle · 25/04/2007 15:02

Well worth shopping around for the Techno (and others I would guess!) We got ours for £100 from the glasgow pram centre website. Much cheaper than the high street...

MrsBadger · 25/04/2007 15:03

Micralite lowdown here - doesn't fold quite as small as the Techno because of the big back wheels but def worth a try, esp as you can put a carrycot on it.
Mothercare don't do them though, so maybe find somewhere you can compare that and the Techno side by side?

And we're pram geeks

beckmo · 25/04/2007 15:04

That is loads cheaper.Sat here on maternity leave so need something to do...researching pushchairs seems to be my new occupation (and sending them back once I have bought them!)

OP posts:
beckmo · 25/04/2007 15:07

Thanks Mrs Badger! It's either the Techno or the Micralite I think.

I'll be back on here in a week moaning about my new ergonomically designed £6000 all leather Phillippe Starck ipod nasa buggy next week the way my mind is working at the moment....

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 25/04/2007 15:08

oh, and the Micralite stands alone when folded, which is pretty neat.

only problem is the price - and that was the cheapest I could find it...

beckmo · 25/04/2007 15:13

Its the same price as the silvercross 3D...but with detachable carrycot. The 3D feels worth its money though....being big and chunky and prammy.
Thing is this is really the only pram that appears to meet all my needs. I am becoming sold. Off to John Lewis tommorow.

honeyapple · 25/04/2007 16:13

Hiya,
Just adding my 2pence worth. I was interested in the micralite, until I read some very negative reveiws of it- I think possibly on the kiddicare website (??). Apparently most people find the buggy bit really unergonomic- ie uncomfy for baby... and also despite it's price it is quite prone to breaking and is a bit unsturdy. I think you really need to have a good test drive with one... I'd be interested how you go at John Lewis.

(ps I had a maclaren last time- it was a quest I think- great buggy )

Indith · 25/04/2007 16:16

I have 2 flights of stairs to negotiate. I'v got a loola. It is well balanced so easy to carry and really easy to fold. The shopping basket is the worst in the world though!

Whoooosh · 25/04/2007 16:16

I started with a Mamas and Papas Pramette which I thought was fantastic.Baby could lie flat,I could see her and then it could be converted very simply into a pushchair.

Eventually traded it in for a Techno once dd was a year old but really did think it was fab for newborns.

beckmo · 25/04/2007 16:19

Aaahh...I'm going buggy crazy. Maybe I'll just get a papoose and carry him or her everywhere. Or a small trailer I can tow behind me?

I've seen both negative and positive reviews for teh microlite and the negative ones are a bit scary...wheels breaking in the middle of the road and babies growing out of the carrycot but being too small for the buggy and sliding down. I think the carry cot has recently been made bigger though.

Now keep going into the nursery and looking at my boxed up Silvercross and thinking I should keep it and just MANAGE to get it up the stairs, fold it down with new magic extra arms, develop great big biceps before I give birth etc!

OP posts:
beckmo · 25/04/2007 16:22

Thanks Whoosh...I think the pilko looks similar to the Silvercross 3D I am sending back?Great pram/ pushchair but just too heavy to carry upstairs and I need to be able to fold it and carry it one handed so the baby isn't left...somewhere.

Maybe I need a new house not a new pushchair?

OP posts:
honeyapple · 25/04/2007 16:23

A sling is a great investment for a little baby. Brill when out and about- only you can't hang your shopping off it.

beckmo · 25/04/2007 16:24

Indith-I'll take another look at the Loola. Meanwhile I'm thinking of writing to the government asking them to enforce that from now on only one pushchair/pram is allowed to be made in this country.

Give me too much choice and I end up running round like a headless chicken....
