I know this has been talked about here many times before but...I've just sent a Silvercross 3D pram back to Mothercare as it was too big and bulky and too hard to fold up. Now out of options and becoming obsessed I live in a small basement flat with stairs to the outside world, will be using London transport BUT also love the idea of having a pram for when bambino is small. Thinking of having to go the expensive bugaboo route but really don't want to be ripped off...any helpful comments/ advice/ ideas...Thanks!

bugaboos are hard to fold down - so impractical if you have a smaal car. the big rubber back wheels are brilliant for bumping up stairs. i am great believer babies first few months should be laid down in a proper carrycot so there is no pressure on spine and even now my dd15mths can lie horizontal when sleeping.

bugaboo is extortionate but its the best buggy/pram i have owned and will do subsequent babies and if not i can still sell it for a fortune on ebay.

ceolas · 25/04/2007 16:48

I think you can drive yourself crazy thinking about it.

The Pramette is lighter and folds slightly smaller than the 3D I think.

EmilyandLola · 25/04/2007 16:55

bugaboo all the way

beckmo · 25/04/2007 16:57

O.K.After an intense afternoon researching all the prams suggested here I have finally come to a decision...I'm getting a Mamas and Papas pramette, a bugaboo, a micralite AND a Techno. And maybe a Loola. That should cover all eventualities and it's almost one for everyday of the week!

Really thinking I'll just keep the 3D now and get on with it -it does have a lovely pram!My DH will think I'm even more nuts than I have been acting so far.....

The main thing I would consider is ease of folding, and swivel wheels at the front etc...

oohh yeah, and that the handle has an adjustable height, my DP at 6'2 can push our bugaboo comfortable and so can my granny at 4'11

sweetkitty · 25/04/2007 17:01

Another vote for the Techno here as well, get a lovely lambskin and/or cosy toes and baby will be really snug. I got a huge travel system for DD1 but got a Techno when she was 6 weeks old and it is fab, still going strong for DD2 (well have a double as well but use it if I only have one of them). It's been on planes, trains and automobiles, not a broken bit on it, looks fab.

beckmo · 25/04/2007 17:02

Could a bugaboo be bumped up a smallish steepish set of stairs (think basement flat to street level)? That would resolve the having to remove it from its chassis to fold it down and up everytime I want to leave the house....

oh you are not nuts there's plenty of us much worse than you are, chances are whatever pram you do get you won't like that much, wish you had got something else and have pram envy i.e. when in shopping centres you check out other peoples prmas (or is that just me)?

BabyMadwithBump · 25/04/2007 17:03

I've brought a Silver cross 3D pramette in marina and I really cant wait to use it, I've had loads and loads of prams/pushchairs/and so on and this 3D has won me over hands down, I've had Pliko's and so on and still the 3D wins me over!

MrsBadger · 25/04/2007 17:03

go to JL and try dragging it up their stairs

and do not post further till you have tried them all in real life!

beckmo · 25/04/2007 17:07

Thanks Mrs B...you have stopped the insanity!Great to be given lots of advice but its like flame to oil!

ive bumped the bugaboo up all kinds of stairs - i used to have a m & p and the wheels used to get stuck under any stairs with a lip on - so frustrating!!! i went to jl and had my 7 yr old ds bouncing on the suspension and got the woman to show me all the combinations about 6 times so they are incredibly patient!!!

EdieMcredie · 25/04/2007 18:09

Thankyou Mrs Badger for pointing me to the other thread!!

Yes having a 3 wheeler in London may be a bit worthless. We mainly liked it cos it is so cheap

treacletart · 25/04/2007 18:28

My tuppence worth...

I had one of the very first model Micralite's (before the carrycots) for DS and it's served us really well. It very very light, really easy to manouever and a breeze onehanded, I've also wheeled it up and down our flight of front steps a thousand times almost effortlessly. We did have a front wheel snap after a couple of years very heavy use (we don't run a car) and an aggresive kerb jolt but they sent us a replacement the next day. It does admittedly feel a little rickety now and I felt I wanted a replacement for number 2 arriving in August. This time around I've gone for a 2nd hand Firstwheels city elite because I need the big back wheels and I'm keen on the forward/rearward facing thing - and I think it might be fractionally lighter than a Bugaboo. Also I appear to have got a bargain with carrycot, footmuff, raincover etc thrown in for £100 (yet to arrive mind you, so it could all go wrong yet!)

Gingerbear · 25/04/2007 18:36

wow Britax Trekker at bargain price!

Yes Gingerbear and I have had a go in RL-very nice and easy to handle. I like Britax.

peachygirl · 25/04/2007 20:41

I have a 3d and love it. I don't find it too much of a problem to fold when in the pram mode. You give it a hard yank.
It does lie flat in the buggy mode too and DD(10 weeks) was ok in it in that mode although I prefer the pram. I carried it up staiton steps and we took it on the underground.
I researched my buggy for ages and went through a very similar dilemma I didn't like the microlite due to it not having a good recline, but I am thinking of one for a second buggy to go over more rugged terrain.
One thing I like about the 3D is that it is light for it's type of buggy. A maclaren techno although slimmer weighs much the same 13.9lbs without hood and basket. The silver corss is 10kg with those things and only slightly more in the pram mode. Believe me I did research all the weights. The loola is also 10kg

mad4girls · 25/04/2007 21:10

hi beckmo
u say u love the 3d but really impractical and someone suggested the m and p pramette this is virually the same thing and i have also been told its hard to fold in pram mode

but i have looked deep into all m and p combos as i love them myself, and they also do what they call pliko travel or soemthing anyway works out same price as pramette/travel system and u get the normal pliko but with a removable carycot(navetta i thinkits called)which would solve the problem of being able to fold it up fixes on and off the same way as the car seat

worth considering check out an m and p store near u, to have a good test drive

HTH

mountain buggy urban plus carrycot. i didn't get the carrycot as dd was a bit older when we got it, but it's fab. we're in london & i bump it up & down steps to get in the house, & get on buses every day. downside is that it's £££. give it a try in jl too!

BabyMadwithBump · 25/04/2007 23:55

I have found that my SC 3D in pramette mode is just as easy to fold, as a normal m&p pliko in pushchair mode with a footmuff (and I've had both)! Yes the 3D is a little heavier than a Pliko but you get a pramette mattress with a 3D where as you dont with a pliko which is a big plus point for me! Also I've found the folding locking mechanism to be better on a 3D than the pliko!
Dont get me wrong the pliko has some good points over the 3d like the zip on rain cover, its lighter, cup holder and so on, but the 3D is the one for me this time round, and I really cant wait to use it.

beckmo · 26/04/2007 15:31

Thanks all!OK...one afternoon spent in John Lewis and Mothercare (John Lewis alot more helpful, honest and knowledgable BTW).

I'm buying a bugaboo gecko.

The 3D has been sent back -yes its so lovely but tooo heavy for what I need.If I lived outside the city and had a car available in the day and no steps it would be my first choice.

Had a go with the Micralite and found it a bit scarey. So wobbly and almost too light, like it would tip back easily and with the carry cot it didn't feel stable. And the harness seemed flimsy and unsupportive. If it was £100 cheaper I could understand it.

Had a good look at the Techno and can see the appeal. It is smooth, light and sturdy! But no pram/ carrycot so not what I'm looking for.

Whilst the bugaboo gecko is soooo light compared to the 3D, folds up small, has a detachable carrycot and I could pick it up easy peasy and had no trouble on JL's stairs even with 34 week bump. Yes its extortionate but feel it will be worth it for all those other reasons.Feeling strangley calm after making this decision but that might have something to do with the magnum I'm eating...have also rediscovered these and find that eating one daily is a great pregnancy tip. x

Oh...Hoxtonchick -thanks for the advice but it came too late. Am having to ignore it in case another option causes me to go buggy mental again.

Although I might take a quick look at it on the internet....
