HELP - early scan has just shown sac but no yolk, fetal pole or heartbeat

I have just been for an early scan. From my last period (15th March) I thought I should have been about 6 weeks. The sonographer could clearly see a sac and it has measured correctly against these dates, but I am really concerned that there was nothing in there - no yolk sac, fetal pole or a heartbeat. Surely there should have been something by now? (It was a vaginal scan as well, not abdominal)

I am so worried as I have had a previous miscarriage a few years ago which was detected at 9 weeks, same thing - no embryo just the empty sac. I am dreading the same thing happening again.

However I did go on to then have a baby, who is now 11 months old. My cycles have been all over the place since stopping bf 5 months ago so the sonographer did try to use this as a reason as to why my dates could be wrong.

Anyway I have to go back in 2 weeks - so I guess it is now just a waiting game.
Has anyone been through the same thing and gone on to have a successful pregnancy? Desperately need some reassurance!

IIRC when I had my early scan with DD at 6 weeks all they could see was the sac. I went back two weeks later and everything was fine. Went on to have a successful pregnancy (in fact too successful, DD went to 42 weeks and didn't want to come out!)

Good luck

don't panic- i know the two weeks wait is agonising but hopefully everythign will be clearer then, i had an early scan at 6 wks and nothing then went on to have a darling dd!

Don't panic! I had an early scan at 5 week ish (can't remember exactly now) and they couldn't see anything at all! Had me down as an ectopic. But went back for blood test etc and more scans and after a few more weeks there was baby and heartbeat. These were al vaginal scans I had too but they are not 100% reliable at this stage as everything is so tiny. I know it is horrendous having to wait but only time will tell. fingers crossed for you.

I had an early vaginal scan at almost 6 weeks and there was only a sac. The sonographer said everything was normal for taht stage(it was a check for an ectopic) but it left me terrified!Everything was normal and my pregnancy is fine. Pleased you have another appointment in 2 weeks so you can hopefully relax.

Hiya. I had an early scan at 6+3 - only sac to be seen. Am now 18+3 . I know the waiting time will feel like forever. Keeping my fingers crossed for you, but I am sure everything will be fine!

I'm also the same - went for a scan at 6 weeks due to horrid awful pains and they could only see a sac but am now 18 weeks and I can assure you that that the baby is there and fine! I went back for a scan 2 weeks later and the baby was there (just a white circle with a tiny heartbeat). good luck.

I too had an early scan at 6 weeks (having had a bleed at 4.5 weeks) and all they found was a sac. I'd had a previous miscarriage (a blighted ovum) at 9 weeks, between two other normal pregnancies, so immediately assumed the worse and thought it would be the same again. Anyway 2.5 weeks later (and feeling sick as a dog by then!) there was our baby on screen. I'm now 11 weeks and will have a nuchal fold scan next week, so keeping fingers crossed everything still OK, and that I'll stop feeling sick soon!

I hope you get the same result without feeling so rough.

Early scans are supposed to work from 7 plus weeks I thought - keep your fingers and toes crossed!x

try not to worry

so much depends on the skill of the sonographer and the quality of the equipment

at 6 weeks i was told by one sonographer that this pregnancy was not viable

the same day - elsewhere - i saw and heard a heartbeat

good luck x

I had a scan at 5 weeks and all that showed was the sac. Went back at 7 weeks and saw a heartbeat. Then again at 10 weeks and saw the baby. Am currently 12 weeks

MamaMaiasaura · 02/05/2007 11:51

I have had the same - had scan yesterday - am 4-5 weeks. Can see gestational sac (poss flicker of embryo but inconclusive. Sac measures 4mm by 5mm and oval. Another scan in 2 weeks to check for embryo and hb. Is reassuring that others have been there. xx
