Lying in bed/on sofa when not asleep

Hi all

So I know that we're supposed to lie on our side to sleep but does that rule also apply when you're awake lying in bed reading, watching tv etc?

Sorry if this a really stupid question but I wasn't sure whether the risk of lying on your back was to do with you being asleep or if it's just bad generally.

Thanks

It's to do with the pressure of your bump restricting blood flow, so it's the lying down, not the actual sleeping.

Lying on your back puts pressure on the inferior vena cava, and that will happen whether you're awake or not. The risk is higher in sleep as likely to put this pressure on the inferior vena cava for longer.

TBH, you'll feel if it's wrong - once you're well along it'll be really uncomfortable to lie on your back - what with the baby squishing your organs (as opposed to just fairly uncomfortable lying on your side Wink)

Whatever feels comfortable is fine.

I thought that would be the answer ☹️🙈 I've heard that you shouldn't slouch or your baby is more likely to be back to back position so it sounds as though I need to either sit up straight or lie on my side to read/watch TV. I'm 31 weeks so just 9ish weeks til I can get comfortable again....
