Weight loss during pregnancy

Has anyone any experience of losing weight while pregnant?

I’m not looking to lose a significant amount, but I was carrying a couple of extra stone pre-pregnancy and had a bmi of 27 so was already significantly overweight. I gained 3lbs over the first 16 weeks which I was ok with but I’ve suddenly gained another 6lbs over the last 3 weeks which is far too much too quickly. Part of this is Christmas over-indulgence but I have to admit to not being strict enough with portions in the last couple of weeks - I feel starving and am eating too much.

I want to nip this in the bud and get it under control before it becomes really problematic. Im normally fairly good at managing my own diet and healthy eating but I’m struggling for motivation it on my own so I’m looking for some structure to help me stay focused.

I know slimming world is safe during pregnancy. Has anyone tried this while pregnant? Or any other options? Thank you.

I might join you you know I was about a stone and a half over weight when I got pregnant I'm now 18 weeks. I'm not going to weigh myself but need some motivation to not eat American pancakes and syrup for tea! I did slimming world after my last pregnancy and found it really easy once you've got your head in the game. I think if you're pregnant/breastfeeding you can have extra healthy extras

Hi @georgie262

I’ve just looked online and they won’t let you do slimming world online only whilst pregnant. I can’t really get to any of the local groups due to work at the moment - free! Wondering whether to just sign up anyway! I’m feeling really huge and really panicked about ending up the size of a house today!!

I’m 19 weeks so about same as you. Absolutely horrified after standing on the scales this morning. I was 10st 8 at the end of May, 11st 6 when I got pregnant and 12st this morning! Aaaaaaaaaah!!!!!

I think I knew that actually I've done it before so know the rules quite well. I'll see if I can dig out the books this evening I'll let you know if I do. My eldest is 6 now before he was born I was about 9 stone 4 then just before I got pregnant with this baby (#3) I was about 11 but I'm not weighing myself again but I reckon I'm at least 12 and I'm 5ft6 so it shows (all on my thighs too so I just look frumpsville) I've developed really bad eating habits lately too. No fruit and veg loads of haribo and ice cream 🍨 lol when I get into a good routine I'm good at eating healthily it's just getting out of this groove. The stupid thing is when I'm not pregnant I don't eat a lot of sweet stuff I'm just replacing the alcohol with sugar.

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 28 weeks pregnant so had to go on a strict sugar free diet and ended up losing 7lbs in 2 weeks. I'm 36 weeks now and have only regained about 4lbs of the weight that I lost.
The diet is strict but still very well balanced and safe. Lots of info and sample menus etc online. If you think you need to lose weight you could try something similar to this as it's obviously safe?

Im 33 weeks and joined sw 4wks before i found out i was expecting. Since then iv lost 3.1st in total through pregnancy. Still got a way to go. Started with a bmi of 48 now down to 31. All with the support of midwife and consultant

Hi @teadid I'm 11 weeks pregnant but have been on slimming world since May 2017. So far in pregnancy I have lost 5lbs. It's not that I'm aiming to lose weight as such just trying to keep on top of it. I figure it will creep up in later months. But I'm happy with the loss especially over Christmas- my bmi is now 30.4 so it's important to me that I don't start slipping and eating all the stuff I used to.

Midwife was happy with me on slimming world and said to think of it more as eating well rather than losing weight.

Anyway good luck Smile

I guess SW is a pretty healthy way of eating so makes sense for pregnancy. I'm hoping that the absence of alcohol will mean natural drop of a few pounds in first few months!! Wink
