I'm 26 weeks pregnant with second baby - have a 3 year old who was born by emcs. Went overdue with him so induced at 42 weeks, had complications and ended up staying in hospital 5 nights with him in scbu with a burst lung. Not a great start but one of those things! Now I have to decide whether to try for a vbac birth or any elective ceasarean. Just looking for any thoughts on this from anyone please? One minute I think go for a vbac then I think just have the elective. Any thoughts appreciated!!

Personally, I would go for the elective. I say this having had an EMCS myself. I like the idea of knowing the date so I can make arrangements for DS1.

Thanks mummaGiles, that's what I'm leaning more towards. The only thing that bothers me is having the surgery scar and a very lively & cuddly toddler who won't understand why I can't be as active as normal! But then the thought of going for a vbac only for it to possibly fail and end up having another emcs worries me too! Ah well, I wanted a water birth last time and my birth plan never even made it out of my bag so I guess what will be will be!

I ended up going Vbac for my second and they were great, when it became clear it was looking like a re-run of the first birth, they didn't hang around and I had an emcs but without all the panic

Oops and meant to add very short gap, 13 months between them but they were confident the scar would hold

i had foreceps with first, elective csec with 2nd who was breach and am trying VBac with 3rd. elective csec is infinitely better than emcs but I think a good VBac is better than csec in terms of recovery.

do you know why you had section with the first? is it something likely to reccur or a one-off?

whatever you do, make sure your decision is based on what you think will be best for you rather than what you feel you ought to do. x
