moses basket, is it used only for few weeks or longer?

hi ladies,
i've been looking on ebay for moses baskets and most of the sellers say "used only for few weeks, baby grew fast/baby on the big side".
at first i thought it was better just to buy a crib. however, we will be moving a month after the baby is born and thought would buy a crib once in the new house (one less thing to pull apart, to worry if it will fit in the new room... etc). therefore, a moses basket could be quite good for us... but the question is...
do you think its a waste of money, even if its an used one, if all babies outgrow it in few weeks? i would love to hear your opinions.

i wouldn't say they're a waste of money but i'd say most are only in them for around 4 months.i got 4 months use with ds(8lb 3oz)but only around 10 weeks with dd(8lb 8oz)as she was very long.they are lovely though and i think when they are that little they are too small to go straight into a cot.have you thought about a crib?you'll get longer out of that.

Not a waste of money esp in your situation as easy to move, i just wouldn't pay much for one as it really is only used for four monhts or so depending on size of baby.

a crib/cradle really is a waste of money - get a cheapy mccheap moses basket, use it as long as you can, then get a cot.

We used ours for 10 weeks, not a long time in the grand scheme of things, but was absolutely invaluable in that time. I could take bubs in the bathroom when I was showering, to the garden when I was pegging out the washing, all without waking her up.

And you can pick one up for about £35, so that's only about £3.50 a week - bargain!

Moved LO out and into a cotbed at 6 weeks. He thrashed around so much the moses basket wobbled on its legs.

I used a moses for 6 weeks with my first, probably will use it for only 6 weeks with the second

If you decide to get one try and find one with leather strap handles - the wicker handles on mine are a bit dodgy

not worth buying

Very useful for having the baby downstairs with you in the first paranoid filled weeks, but not for the long term...

Used my moses basket for about four months each time - when they slept through the night they went into the cot in their own room. Actually we moved exactly a month after DS1 was born too, and only put up the cot in the new place. He slept in the moses basket placed in the cot.

It does depend on the size of your baby. But we are in a similar position, hoping to move soon, and went for a basket and will buy a cot bed in the new house.
For us it has been great DD was small but 10 weeks on she is still in the basket and has a good 20cms still to grow into, however my friend had a very long baby and they used it for only a few weeks

I used a moses basket for as long as I could. Once I they couldn't be shoehorned into it any more, they went straight onto a futon. I never used a cot.

Essential for us because we travelled quite a bit when they were small and a basket is far lighter than a travel cot.

i will get one then. if i can get few months out of it, its good enough for me. it could be that our baby is too long, but there is only so much planning we can do! i can get one for 30 tops at ebay, including delivery.

We had a mothercare one that was quite long. We used it for the whole 6 months DS was in our room. He wasn't much of a roller though!

used it for 3 months & then DD was too long to fit any more (she was/is on the 95th percentile for height though

So yes they are probably worth it, but either borrow one, or buy the cheapest decent one you can, they aren't used for long.

Depends how fast they grow. With dd we had one for a few months as she was tiny and only weighed 9ish pounds at 3 months. Ds1 we used it for about 3 weeks and that was it. Ds2 didn't bother and he's just as fast growing as ds2 weighing 16lb 4 oz at 14 weeks hehe.

Oh and it was only for daytime use as we co-sleep.

Depends on your tot, with DS we used it for 4wks. DD1 we didnt have one but were bought one for DD2 which I use downstairs. She is now 15wks and is just growing out of it in length so will be selling it on.

I think they are a good buy but not used for long about 4 months really, it does make life alot easier though for those 4 months.

I had a moses basket for dd1 & a swinging crib for dd2 I did prefer the crib though I must say, had the space then though.

meant to say get leather handles and preferably a proper wicker basket as they are super sturdy comapared to the cheaper ebay/argos ones. Ours is soo sturdy that if DD1[16mths] leaned in to kiss DD2 the sides didnt fold in on her.

I think moses baskets are great- you can move them from room to room with you (or upstairs at night, downstairs during daytime) and they can be bought second hand very cheaply. BUT DS (despite being premature and TINY!) did grow out of his after about 10 weeks- he used to hit the sides of it and get annoyed!! Mind you by then he was in our bed most the time at night, and during the day if he wasn't happy in the moses basket I had an old-fashioned pram with carrycot which he would sleep in downstairs.

I never used a crib, just went straight from moses basket/our bed to a normal cot (firstly beside our bed with base set to same height as our bed so I could reach between bars to comfort him etc.) and then at 7 months into his own room in the cot.

Also have to admit when visiting friends while DS was tiny we did use an empty draw with a mattress made of towels, blankets & sheet!! He was v comfy in that too!!

waste of money

Not a complete waste of money, I loved mine (used it til about 4/5 months - dd was quite small) as you could move it around and so on, but then, mine was given to me!
