Chicken Pox

I'm 39 weeks pregnant and due to meet a friend tomorrow but her two children have chicken pox.

She is fine as she had it when she was little but is there a risk of her carrying it and passing it on to me?

Don't want to take any unnecessary risks this late on.

Have you had chicken pox?

gryffen · 28/12/2017 23:28

If you have had chicken pox then there is a damn good chance you will be fine but remember you can get it more than once and Shingles is the adult form of it.

If you haven't then it's your choice but I personally would ask if they are past the infectious stage and spots are gone.

Considering how many bacteria and viruses we are exposed to daily you should be fine, but depends if you want to be I'll near due date if you do catch something (including basic colds etx)

Two of my 3 kind DS has chicken pox each time I was pregnant. I had it when I was 7 so was fine personally but my daughter (who I was pregnant with whilst my middle son had it has developed a natural immunity as a result!

@gryffen you can't catch shingles from chickenpox. It just happens to people who've had chickenpox in their lives at some point. You can catch chickenpox from shingles though but she (the friend) won't catch shingles from her children who have chickenpox if that makes sense.

My mum says I had it three times very mildly. I didn't think that was even possible so I'm not sure if I'm immune.

If you have had it mildly I would try avoid. Plus the incubation period for it can be up to three weeks so say you caught it again then it took the full three weeks to come out you would have a newborn then who could more than likely catch it. If it was me I would avoid unless like Pp stated her kids have come out the infectious stage so all spots dried up.
Chances are you would be fine but I wouldn’t risk it so close to due date.

Thanks, think I'll rearrange for next week. Just not worth the risk x

I had it when i was 15 badly and then again at 35 and shingles at 32 , so you definitely can get it more then once

That's ok, never said she 9r anyone would catch shingles just that it was the adult form of it. ☺
