Insane but could a twin be missed on 3 scans in early pregnancy?

When I first found out I was pregnant I began bleeding, my dr took my bloods and my hcg was around 90 at 4 weeks exactly. She said this was slightly high which was good, she said we would repeat in 7 days and expect a level of around 700, it came back 4500! I was sent for a scan as she assumed a multiple pregnancy. Scan showed one sac and one small yolk sac (was exactly 5 weeks) I went back a week later and still one sac one yolk sac and one baby with a heart beat. I paid for a private scan at 9 weeks and still just one baby in there. Last night I had an emergency trip to the drs for something not pregnancy related but she felt my tummy anyways and she felt my bump at the bottom of my tummy. She asked how many weeks I was and I said 10. She says my bump is quite a size and measured it at 12cm and asked if I’m having twins! I said no my scan showed one baby she asked if I was sure? Now I’m freaked out and wondering if a baby could actually be missed early on? My symptoms in this pregnancy have been a lot more full on than my other pregnancies, boobs much more painful, sickness a lot worse and started a lot earlier......

Surely not after that many scans?

Yes its still early

When I had an eight week scan she went 'through' with the scanner from one side to the other to show that there was only one baby. Surely yours would have done similar, even if she didn't signpost it?

I'm pretty sure they'd have picked it up but I guess it's not a given. 9 weeks is fairly significant though. My bump is "quite a size" as well and I get twin comments regularly - I definitely just have the one baby in there but there was a time where both me and my midwife mother thought I could be expecting twins! Bump size and symptoms aren't necessarily signs of twins - scans are much more accurate, obviously. So I'd go with it being unlikely.

My bumps.always measured a few weeks ahead all the way through. My smallest baby was 9lb2oz (at 10 days early) and my biggest was 10lb8oz, I just have big babies

Yes. Know someone who’s twin wasn’t picked up until 32 weeks. Think the conversation went something like “have you bought the pram”? “Have you kept the receipt”?

I'm 25 weeks and my GP asked me if I'm sure it's only one the other day. She said I felt more like 30 weeks to her. I've had scans at 8, 10 and 20 weeks so I'm pretty confident - baby was huge at 20 week scan. She did say it could just be the way I'm carrying, so you might be the same. I actually feel like my waist is more defined now at the back and side than it was before I was pregnant, so I think I'm just carrying everything very far forward.
