Bleeding in early pregnancy - any hope?

Hi. I posted on another thread as I was certain I was pregnant from last Weds (5 days before period was due). Had negative tests up until this morning when I finally got my BFP. So so happy as we’ve been trying for our 2nd baby since February and I had a miscarriage at 6.5weeks in the summer (natural MC that took 6 weeks to complete which was utter hell!).

Anyway an hour after I found out I was pregnant this morning I started bleeding and I’m so worried! Since I’m only 4 weeks it’s too early to do anything and the docs have just advised to keep taking tests over Xmas as if they’re still positive I will need an early scan at 6 weeks but if not it’s another miscarriage.

The bleeding that started today is red and I’ve had tiny clots but the bleeding is half what I’d normally have on my first day of my period so I don’t know if it is a miscarriage or not. The bleeding was quite heavy with my miscarriage in the summer.

Has anyone had period type bleeding and had a successful pregnancy? Clinging onto any glimmer of hope to get me through Christmas!

I had spotting on and off around weeks 5-10 and one occasion red blood but it was much less than what you described, on that occasion I called the maternity hospital and they advised me not to worry as long as it wasn't enough blood to fill a sanitary towel, but if it got to that stage to call them back as they would probably want me to go in and get checked.

I can't really help but I do know that it's not uncommon to have some light bleeding during first trimester so I have my fingers crossed for you Flowers

And congratulations on your pregnancy and I'm really sorry to hear about your MC Flowers

I had bleeding until about 14 weeks. A mix of spotting and larger amounts. I had a friable cervix. DC is completely fine although was born early but I have no idea if this was related.

Thanks for your replies, it’s good to hear some positive outcomes. I’ve had more bleeding in the night which is bright red but no clots which is good, I usually get really big clots on the first and second days of my period and I had the same with my miscarriage. The fact I only had a few tiny ones and the bleeding is less than a period is giving me some hope. Pregnancy test was still positive this morning but I know from my miscarriage in the summer it took until I would have been 12 weeks to get a negative result! (mc started at 6+3)

I'm not an expert so don't want to give you false hope, but I had a bleed at 12 weeks and spent the night in hospital awaiting a scan the next day and told to prepare for the worst as it was a miscarriage.
That "miscarriage" is now nearly 16 - so fingers crossed for you

I bled at 7 weeks pregnant and it wasnt enough to fill a pad but it was enough to seem like a period and I had some clotting. It seemed to calm down the next night and I had a scan a few days later and everything was ok with the baby. No explanation for the bleeding other than "it happens sometimes" Fingers Crossed for you x

I had some very light discharge this morning but I'm taking it was from the Dildocam ultrasound I had on Thursday and nookie last Night, still a bit tender but no pain.

Some bleeding is seen as normal but never ever feel like a burden to NHS and not get seen too especially if blood has clots etc.

Better checked than not.

Good luck!

I had some significant bleeding at around 7 weeks with (apologies if TMI) one very large clot which I had convinced myself must have meant a miscarriage. I had a scan a few days later and everything turned out fine. He's now 9 weeks old and sleeping peacefully next to me right now Smile

I hope things turn out the same way for you too OP, don't give up hope Flowers

Ah this is so positive to hear your story. I’m afraid I think I’ve had another miscarriage as although the bleeding isn’t any heavier today I’ve passed a couple of large clots like I did when I had a miscarriage in the summer. So gutted. Was hoping to share our news with close family at Christmas but now we’re just grieving yet again! Fingers crossed we can conceive again soon. I’m going to take another test in a week to see if it’s still positive. From my last mc it took 6.5 weeks after the bleeding started to get a negative test.

I'm really sorry to hear this OP and hoping that the outcome is still positive for you. I know a scan won't show much of anything at this stage but to save you going through the hell of constantly testing could you not get your HCG levels checked 48 hours apart? At least then you'll have a better idea of what's happening.

Here for hand holding if needed Flowers
