Help with ultrasound dates- 5/6 week scan. No Fetal pole

Hi
This is my third attempt at pregnancy so naturally I am nervous about everything.
Some advice would be great as I am spotting at the moment.
My LMP was 7/11/17
My first faint positive was 4/12/17 and my first digital indicating conception 1-2 weeks was 6/12/17
My first digital 2-3 weeks since conception was 11/12/17

I had a private scan on Wednesday 20/12/17 as I started bleeding
Gestational sack was seen measuring at an average of 10.4 mm and the yolk sac was measuring at 3.3 mm
It says on the scan that these measurements indicate a 6 week gestation period but no Fetal pole or heartbeat was found.

She said I could only be 5 weeks. But how is that possible when I had a positive test on 4/12? That would mean I had a positive test at just 2 weeks and 5 days and then at 3 weeks. This also means I conceived my baby the week my period was due and I don’t have irregular periods at all.

Anyone else experienced this? Can anyone shed some light? Will the baby show at 7 weeks when I scan next week or just 6 weeks? Will it catch up? Will I miscarry?

I had unprotected sex on the 19th, 21st and 24th November but wasn’t monitoring ovulation.

Thanks in advance.

I had a scan at what was 6 weeks, they could only see a sad and no pole and said I could be more like 5. Went back when I was 7 weeks 3 days and there was a legal pole and heart beating like crazy! So at this early stage it's often hard to know, but there's a good chance all is fine!

Maincat · 22/12/2017 12:43

Oh my god auto correct! Sac and fetal

amsg2000 · 22/12/2017 12:52

Thanks for your response. So were your dates wrong or did they adjust back to what it was originally?

Nope, my dates were right! Bang on. It's just we're all individuals and although they might expect to see something at a certain time, sometimes they can't! So at 6 weeks all they saw was a sac and yolk, then a week later it had a full heart beat and pole! At my 12 week scan I was 12+1 so my dates were very accurate right from the start. I know it's a worrying time, especially after loss or difficulty - have they booked you in for another scan in a week or so to compare? I dont want to give you false hope but it may well be all OK xx

Thank you. I’m just taking each day as it comes to be honest. I am having a scan after Christmas. Worried that they will only measure me at 6 weeks though. I should be 7 weeks on Christmas Day.
I couldn’t have ovulated the week of my period. I didn’t even dd that week! X

I had a scan at 6 weeks due to severe abdominal pain, there was no heartbeat, just a sac.
Went back a week later and the heart was fluttering away.
I'm now 27 weeks (almost).
This pregnancy stuff is very stressful isn't it!

amsg2000 · 22/12/2017 20:36

Very!
Do you remember what they dated you when you went back for your second scan? X

I got a positive test on 21/11 and I had a very early scan on 6/12 when I thought I was 6+4. The scan showed a sac and yolk but no fetal pole, I was worried because it didn't match my dates at all and they said I was 5+ weeks! However, I had a scan on 20/12 and there was a little peanut with a heartbeat flickering away and I was 8+1 according to measurements! So by my dates that's only 3 days difference, they then said that the 12 week scan gives a more accurate due date as measurements are far more accurate. I was worried for 2 weeks but everything is fine and it seemed like my little baby grew 3 weeks in the space of 2! It's so hard when it's so very early on in the pregnancy. More than likely you will be ok Smile

Thank you for your message. I’m hoping my baby catches up. I’ve read so many stories of this happening. I remember the first pregnancy I lost my first scan was measured at 6 weeks and exactly a week later I was measured at 7 + 2. It’s such an annoying time to wait as well!

I don't know whether I'm doing the right thing posting this, but thought it was only fair to give a balanced picture - when this happened to me it was a miscarriage. But I've seen lots of women with the same stories and happy endings. Unfortunately you just have to wait (which I know is torture) because no one can tell you what the outcome will be - really hoping for happy news for you at the follow-up scan.

If you're bleeding won't your EPU see you (your GP may need to refer you) rather than needing private scans? EPU could also check whether your hormones are going up or down - if down then it's a definite miscarriage, which is horrible but does give you an answer.

I had a scan at 6 weeks and my sac was empty but measured right. No yolk sac or anything just empty. She told me this was likely a blighted ovum and I had to go back In 1 week. I went back and there was a sac measuring 7 weeks a yolk sac and a baby and heart beat. He’s 7 now. No idea why he took so long to appear though

amsg2000 · 23/12/2017 12:40

I’m sorry to hear this.
I worry every day. But just trying to enjoy Christmas time x

And that’s what I’m hoping Nikki. I’ll keep you posted. My sac measured at 6 weeks and a yolk sac present. But no Fetal pole. Wondering if she just wasn’t thorough enough or whether or not baby was just hiding. Hoping for either of those as the answer xx

Did she do an internal, or just an external scan?

Whizziwig · 23/12/2017 14:53

I had one at 5.5 weeks that just showed an empty sac. Had to go back 10 days later and could see a heartbeat then. Less than 7/8 weeks is too early to be conclusive I would think.

amsg2000 · 23/12/2017 15:03

Internal. She also said my uterus looked a bit tilted. I’ve never been told that before. X

Mine is tilted too which I didn't know until the scan. Maybe it makes it harder to see.
