Not sure if this is normal or not. Googling mentions leaking colostrum at this point is normal, but I am producing proper milk. My boobs feel full and if I squeeze they squirt milk out. It this normal? Or should I be worried?

Someone mentioned it might be a sign baby will come early.

Do you mean it like squirts out as in shoots across the room, or you can just express some? It's normal to be able to express colostrum. I've been able to since 23 weeks this pregnancy. Boobs don't always feel full, but sometimes they do and I can express more easily when they do (obviously not trying to properly express as you should wait til later for that, but I can if I need to). Typically milk production is triggered by labour hormones so doesn't come in until several days after labour, so it's likely what you're seeing is colostrum. You might just have a lot of it. I soak the bed at night some nights (I'm 31 weeks), but then nothing others.

As far as I'm aware it's got nothing to do with when baby comes. It's just a thing there's no particular reason for.

It won't be mature milk yet. Production of mature milk is triggered by the expulsion of the placenta and doesn't come in until 2-3 days after that, sometimes longer.

Don’t worry. It’s normal. As the others say it’s colostrum.
In my observation, it’s usually accompanied by excellent milk production if you choose to breast feed!

Had it from about 22 weeks and went almost 2 weeks over due date and then couldn’t produce any milk to bf!

Thanks all. Was just a bit worried as it doesn't look like colostrum. Well sometimes it does, but mostly it's more watery. Might ask the midwife next time I see her. Just really worried about they baby coming early! Have built it up in my head.

Colostrum often looks watery. I promise you, it all sounds completely normal.

If leaking large amounts of milk meant anything wrt babies coming early, don't you think the NHS would monitor it?

pastabest · 17/12/2017 19:27

I was leaking from about 20 weeks onwards. Baby came about half a day early.

All very normal as previous posters have said.

Fwiw I started leaking colostrum from about 25 weeks. DD was 17 days late 😂

peachesarenom · 17/12/2017 20:12

Have any of your collected it and frozen it ready for baby?

Oysterbabe · 17/12/2017 21:20

Yep normal. I've been leaking for months, baby is due today and no sign. I have a good stash of colostrum filled syringes in the freezer though :)
