I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:

Another invaluable website is:

Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:

I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.

Thanks just, that's what I've been doing, but was hoping there was a better option....

elephant I'm gonna echo what everyone else is saying and get help. don't forget that your body is so full of hormones now, and on top of it all HG, it's a wonder any of us can think straight at all. I've felt suicidal at times too, it's just too much sometimes.

mummadave I really hope you get off from work. drinking is always more difficult than eating for me. and I have massive aversions to sweet things in pregnancy, don't know why. like others said, fizzy drinks were tolerable for me in the very early days, and I've just gotten into fortified soy milk, hopefully I can get some vitamins from it. I can't do ice lollies (too sweet) but crushed ice has been a lifesaver for me.

Didn't sending you much love. it's awful, I know. wish I had better advice, but hang in there.

Peaches congrats on your BFP

Life so happy to hear your good news.

RockingLobstering · 15/01/2018 08:24

So i called into work sick again today, another terrible night and morning of non stop vomiting- and my boss was a bit bitchy. Saying how it affects everyone when I'm off sick and she doesn't know of she's going to have to get a temp in or not. I understand her frustration but I'm not doing this on purpose! When I'm in I'm a hard worker and everything is fine, I have just had a lot of time off these past 2 months due to hyperemisis. Feeling pretty shitty now for not going in. Even though i know I'd spend most of the day with my head in the toilet.

justtheonethen · 15/01/2018 08:39

Rocking I think that's appalling. I would complain to HR about her. What a twat.

Herecomesanotheron2018 · 15/01/2018 13:03

Hi everyone.

My meds stopped working so I phoned the doctor again this morning. He's prescribed me ondanestron (sp). Will that be just as safe as the prochlorperazine I was taking? I'm so anxious about taking meds. My mental health is really suffering from being so sick so my anxiety is in overdrive too now.

justtheonethen · 15/01/2018 13:10

Here totally safe.

www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/help/women-suffering/treatments/ondansetron/

Do get some lactulose though, the constipation is horrendous!

Natsku · 15/01/2018 14:02

Talking of constipation, DD is very constipated right now, on the lactulose morning and night but no joy yet. What else can I do to help her? She was in too much pain this morning to walk to school :(

Lifeofpies · 15/01/2018 14:15

Poor thing, Natsku, it’s so rotten. A warm bath can be helpful, lots of fruit juice... maybe watching some videos about poo and constipation (that’s what I did with my son!).
Our friends made a fun video when their son was having cancer treatment and was constipated, your DD May be too old for it, but it helps DS relax when he’s struggling m.youtube.com/watch?v=U3iOmhIIc_s

bitzy12 · 15/01/2018 14:42

Hi, this is my first post on this thread. Pregnant with 3rd dc. 6wk+5. Suffered with hg in my last pregnancies.

Thought somehow I may be lucky this time but over the weekend it's started :-( I haven't been sick yet but constant nausea, it's how it always starts with me.

My question is my gp prescribed me with some prochlorperazine last year when I fell pregnant but I suffered a miscarriage and never took it.

Should I start taking it now even before I've started being sick? My nausea is absolutely awful and I know what's to come :-( I have 2 dcs so obviously I want to do everything I can to help myself.

Any miracle remedies that may work? It's been 7 years since I last went through this x

Shehz21 · 15/01/2018 15:40

bitzy12 Hey there. Welcome to the thread.
Sorry to hear about your past miscarriage.
About the nausea,it can feel much worse than the actual vomiting. It is debilitating and what you need most right now is taking the medecines before it moves on to the next level of N+V.
I would suggest ondansetron if you find prochlorperazine is not cutting it. Ondansetron has been a real life saver for loads of sufferors on here. Also do go through our Mother Hen Lucinda's list of "safe food & drinks" for hg sufferors as even if you are a veteran,it's been 7 years and you might benefit from staying away from loads of food and beverages while you are in the depth of HG.
Oh forgot to say congratulations on this pregnancy and fingers crossed all goes well Flowers

Nat prune juice maybe? Worked a treat on me!

Here definitely safe!

justtheonethen Woop woop 8 weeks!! We are so close Grin and totally can relate about all the energetic jabs and punches and kicks going on in the bump atm!

Rocking You really DO NOT have to feel bad about that ass! How it affects everyone when you are off sick?! Well how about the effect on you if you go in at this point!! It wouldn't only affect you physically but also mentally. This condition -HG- can drain the life out of you!
Sorry if i'm being a bit dramatic but the unsympathetic manager got on my nerves!Angry
I am so angry for you.

Life Yay on getting a due date!

Peaches Congrats on your BFP!Flowers
Hope you got the meds from your GP.

elephant I do hope you are finally turning a corner at 21 weeks and so sorry about the SPD. It really is a horrible thing on top of the HG! Sad

LucindaE · 15/01/2018 15:41

bitzy12 Welcome. Congratulations on your pregnancy, and sorry to hear about your MC. As you are a veteran, no need for my spiel about 'have you got kesostix to check for the early stages of dehydration?' and talk of how flat full sugar coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit etc has helped many. There is evidence that the earlier you take the meds the less likely it is so spiral out of control. It seems to be to do with a neurological vomiting pattern the brain can get into, Badhominem being a doctor, could explain that!
Elephantgrey Everything can seem threatning with pregnancy hormones making one emotional. I am sure that that is a wild fear, but as others say, you might benefit from a bit of counselling to put it to rest. I confess to ignorance about 'hypermobility syndrome' . I have loose joints, but it must be more than that?
Great advice from Endora for Elephantgrey. On that hyper-salvation, it does so add to the nausea. Some spit into bowls, some say spitting generated more saliva, some suck sweets, but that can generate more saliva. I sucked barley sugars to get rid of the disgusting taste, that generated more saliva... you feel as if you can't win, but on anecdotal evidence, it does seem to improve as the weeks go by.
mummadave I am so glad that your OH is being more helpful.
Natsku You have had great advice already - but would baked potatoes for the skins - baked or raw apples - for the skins - carrots cooked in their skins, figs, cocoanut and tinned peaches do any good?
Lifeofpies Sorry to hear about your friends' LO. That worry is one that all parents dread.
RockingLobstering That manager does sound pretty awful. Sorry, do remind me; do you work in a workplace with a union or a human resources department.
Herecomesanotherone Sorry to hear that. I do hope you get a better combination.
justtheonethen I typed a message for you, and now can't find it.
Someone asked about fluids: here's my usual spiel about what most people hae found most helpful over the years, if it is any good: flat full sugar coke, lemonade, Lucozade, ice lollies, ice cubes, soda water, Dr Pepper, Elderflower Water, sips of chocolate milkshake (maybe soya),orange juice, fizzy orange, jelly, slices of mango, slices of melon and cuppa soup.
Lifeofpies Congratulations on your scan! Happy news. Added you.

Didntcomeheretofuckspiders · 15/01/2018 16:36

After a really rough weekend, I’ve been prescribed ondansetron and ranitidine, and signed off work for a week. Hopefully this makes the difference. Was very ketotic earlier today but have since managed to eat a danish pastry (literally the only thing I wanted) and have some sips of coke. All ok as long as I lie flat! DP is being AMAZING.

Herecomesanotheron2018 · 15/01/2018 17:31

Thanks everyone.

I went for an early scan today and it was such a relief to see the heart beat flickering away. It makes me feel like this is worth it, I think it's really helped my state of mind to see the baby :)

My instructions say to take the ondanestron twice a day. When would be the best times would you suggest?

thingymaboob · 15/01/2018 18:22

Hi everyone. I'm overdue and still vomiting everyday. They won't bloody induce me as I'm 1-2cm dilated. So fed up of being sick. Have put on 2.5kg only in this pregnancy. I had put on more but am losing it again right at the end as nausea and vomiting have worsened again. I did have a few excellent weeks around weeks 35-38 and ate good amount of food then and was able to go out for meals etc. I have group B strep so I will be consultant led and IV ondansetron is in the birth plan. Hope all of you who are starting out in the first trimester are being well looked after and supported because it's a long slog!

OrangeCloud18 · 15/01/2018 18:26

Herecomes I've been on Ondansetron since week 12, after trying several medications and a series hospital admission. I am on 2 a day and take them first thing in the morning and at lunchtime.
I have a cereal bar on my nightstand so when I wake up I eat it then take Ondansetron straight away. I stay in bed for about 20min after that, then I get up and go to work. Once you choose a time, stick to it as even an hour or two late can make me feel horrible. I take the 1st one between 6 and 7am and the 2nd one between 12 and 1pm.
I'm 33 weeks now and Ondansetron has been my life savior. I managed on 1 a day for a few weeks in 2nd trimester but had a relapse about 28 weeks.
Hope this helps!

Consultant, midwife and GP agreed to have me on 2 Ondansetron a day, so relieved!
Placenta seems to be working ok and baby was all good on scan last Friday but depending on next one at 36 weeks I might be induced before 40 weeks!

Elephantgrey · 15/01/2018 19:29

Thank you everyone for your kind words and advice. It really helps to know that I am not alone.

Lucinda hypermobility syndrome is when you have loose joints and joint pain and some mobility difficulties. You are more likely to dislocate your joints. It also affects your connective tissue so you are more likely to have stretchy skin and some other health problems. A lot of people have hypermobility with out the syndrome. A lot of dancers have hypermobility and it can be an advantage for them. It does have problems for people during pregnancy almost everyone gets SPD so I was prepared for that unlike with hyperemersis. I did also have Tourette's syndrome and anxiety so basically a perfect storm of pregnancy complications.

On the plus side I do feel that the hyperemersis is getting better I can drink more.

justtheonethen · 15/01/2018 20:50

Natsku oh bless her. I don't know. Dried fruit? Loads of water?

Bitzy absolute yes! Meds work best preemptively. Congratulations on your pregnancy! Third HG pregnancy, you're brave! I also started with awful nausea. It's so debilitating.

Shehz it's crazy isn't it. I get little hard bits sticking out now too. I love it! Does feel like she is trampolining on my bladder early morning though Grin
We are SO close!

Waves to Lucinda Smile
*
Didn't* hurrah for ondansetron, it's the bomb! Glad DH being good Smile

Here oh it's magic seeing that little flickering heartbeat isn't it. Congratulations Star
I would take first thing then at lunchtime/afternoon. I couldn't manage twice a day though so if you need to do 3 times a day then go to gp and get it adjusted. I have to take at 6.30/12.30/6.30 on the dot else I'm in bits.

Thingy argh so unfair you're still suffering. Seems ludicrous they won't induce you, can they not break your waters?

Orange hurrah for getting meds sorted!

Elephant fingers crossed you're improving.

I went to see the gp today and he said I should stay on the same dose of prednisolone until the end if needed and wean off after birth. He said no risk to baby at all, he thought it was ludicrous I wasn't prescribed it earlier and said I should have come back to him when the hospital were difficult. To him being pretty constantly in a cycle of being in ketosis and needing a drip recently at this stage made it a no brainer. I love him. A supportive gp makes all the difference.

So I'm feeling pretty good! Steroids really have been the miracle cure for me. I only wish I had pushed for them early on. Still taking ondansetron, metoclpramide, ranitidine and cyclizine but they said not to stop them. Might try and wean down the doses but maybe I should just stick with a combination that works.

Freddosmum · 15/01/2018 20:54

Hello all,

I'm 11 weeks and been suffering since about 6 weeks. On anti sickness tabs but still struggling to keep anything down off to out of hours now as ketones at +++. Dr seemed very reluctant to give me a slot and kept referencing Kate Middleton so not high hopes! Fingers crossed maybe some different meds will help!

Lots of the comments on here are super helpful and have put a smile on my miserable face!

justtheonethen · 15/01/2018 22:53

Freddo I hope you get better meds, and possibly a drip with those ketones. What meds have you tried?
That doctor sounds stupid 🙄

Natsku · 16/01/2018 04:43

Thanks for the advice you lot, will get some prune juice today and think I have some dried fruit somewhere. Have been giving her berries and going to sauna (don't have a bath but sauna always worked when she was a baby, and very quickly too...many times I had to clean poo off the sauna bench!!) as well as the lactulose and really hoping she gets relief before it's time to go to school this morning as me and OH will be away in the city all day for my appointment so can't pick her up from school if she starts hurting too much there.

Shehz21 · 16/01/2018 04:56

Didn'tcomehere Lovely about keeping down the danish pastry and re dp being amazing!Smile you really do need the RL support atm.
Re lying down and the coke, most of us spent weeks 7-17 lying down flat as much as possible since any movement or even sound/light could trigger the worst vomit sessions! Coke was the only thing I could hold down but unfortunately contributed to the extra saliva. Hope you are not encountering this problem.

Orange Must be a relief to see bubba thriving everytime you go for a scan and are you hoping to be induced early?
7 weeks to go girl! So close to the Pink Castle!

Thingymaboob Oh noo poor you love Sad
I was expecting your next post would be a lovely update with Baby Thingy already cuddled in your arms but seems he/she is very snuggly in there and not in a hurry to meet the world!
Bigs hugs to you, hang on in there its nearly over! The horrible vom sesh can only last couple of days more Flowers
On another note only 2.5kg, I am jealous! 13kgs here at almost 31 weeks, a medicated fluffly.

justtheonethen Don't try to rush into weaning off your medecines love. Just enjoy these last couple of weeks now that you can! Steroids must be the real deal as I only now noticed how you mentioned in an earlier post that you imagine doing this again! I can't even think of it!!
So glad you have a supportive and understanding gp. Wish all the HG sufferors could have gps like this. A real life support network is so important and that mainly refers to family members(esp OH) and health professionals.

Freddo oh poor you having had to suffer so much with an unrealistic gp. What does he mean by trying to refer to Kate Middleton?
Hope you did get a drip with ketones +++.

Waves to everyone else.

Shehz21 · 16/01/2018 04:59

Crossed posted with Nat

Fingers crossed the prune juice or atleast the sauna works on her! Poor baby, she must be utterly fed up. We adults get so miserable with constipation, really hope she gets some relief.
Goodluck for your appointments today!

Natsku · 16/01/2018 06:27

We have had success!! Much relief and now she's off to school with a spring in her step.

Was speaking to someone yesterday who works for the local area's newspaper - they're waiting for the first baby of the year in our town to be born so looks like baby Natsku might be in the running for that Grin

OH has taken the day off work to take me to the appointment and hopefully to the big library in the city so I can stock up on books. Have to go shopping for ski shoes for him too so he can take DD skiing as I obviously can't.

Hope everyone has a good not-too-sick day today - a good day every now and then really helps keep your spirits up.

OrangeCloud18 · 16/01/2018 06:53

Shehz I don't want to go overdue but I don't necessarily want to be induced early. I've got a family history of placental insufficiency so they need to monitor his growth as a few weeks ago he was measuring small and my fundal height was -3cm.

justtheonethen · 16/01/2018 08:13

Natsku hurrah! Good luck for your app. Eek hope your baby is the first one, how cool!

Shehz they are the absolute nuts! I genuinely feel that I could get through the dark weeks up to the end of the first trimester if these were waiting for me on the other side.
Think I'll keep meds how they are. Too scared to come off any, was on a bit of a high yesterday Grin

Elephantgrey · 16/01/2018 08:16

thingmabob you must be really fed up now. I hope your baby comes soon. Its good that you do have onadestron drip on your birth plan.

Freddo I too hope you got fluids as well as some better mess. I vomited up the first lot of medication I was given and the hospital gave me an injection (I have no idea of what) and then IV cyclizine. If you have seen a midwife yet and have an early pregnancy unit you may get more joy out of them than your GP.

Shez and Orange do you both have only 7 weeks to go? You must be counting down the days. I hope baby orange keeps doing well.

Nstsku I hope your appointment goes well today and I'm glad your DD is feeling better. GrinFor babyNatsku being potentially your towns first baby of the year.

I hope everyone is doing well today.
