Hello,

I’m pregnant with my first baby and have my 16 week midwife appointment coming up soon. What happens at this appointment? Will I get to hear the heartbeat?

Thanks!

Blood pressure, check for heartbeat although sometimes they can't find it so do not panic, general wellbeing, I think they do blood tests at this one too and book you in for your 20 week scan.
Try and write down any questions you might have but this appt generally is quite quick.

Just bloods and urine really

they might attempt to listen in with the Doppler but a lot of trusts have stopped doing it now.

Unless there is something else going on it will probably be a fairly quick appointment. They are all much the same from this point on apart from scans.

Not much unless something's wrong. They didn't want to listen to baby's heartbeat incase it was too early to pick it up.

I had mine last week. She took the report from my 12 week scan and tested my urine. Didn't take any blood or listen to the heartbeat. I was already booked for my 20 week scan so she just arranged my next midwife appointment. Very boring!

Oh, she also took my blood pressure again.

Mine was a group appointment. About 8 of us and the midwife. Took urine and blood pressure and then did a bit of a talk about what happens at further apps. Then if we wanted to, we went for a look round the birthing centre.

I heard my son’s heartbeat when I was in labour! They don’t bother with it so much now.

Bloods and pee is pretty much the routine lol. I had so many water infections it was unreal!

I did get to hear the heartbeat at the 16 week appt, had BP and urine done then we talked about what to expect at the 20 week scan. We went through my booking blood results and then NHS nuchal screening/blood test results (which I had already had the letter about).

Blood is only routinely taken at mws booking appts and 28 week appt. They only repeat that at 28 weeks mainly to check iron levels. It's normally just a well-being check. Xx
