Has anyone had recent zika advice?

Hi, my husband and I had started thinking about a holiday to Barbados in January when I will be 21 weeks pregnant.

I had seen in the news several months ago that the Zika emergent was over however when I checked gov.uk I saw that Barbados still has a ‘moderate zika risk’.

I’m going to speak to my midwife to see what the nhs advice is but has anyone been/considered going to the Caribbean recently whilst pregnant?

Thanks
Jessica

Most people (eg NHS staff) will recommend you follow the FCO advice on gov.uk. I think moderate zika risk would mean it’s a big no for a pregnant woman. Sorry!

I wouldn't risk it myself

I wouldn’t risk it. I contracted Zika this year on honeymoon so it does happen! I only got bitten a max of 5 times so thought I was fine. Luckily not pregnant at the time!

Flyingfruit - that’s so unlucky!!! Hope it didn’t make you too ill!

Yes I absolutely agree that it isn’t worth the risk, I was just checking that there is still considered to be a risk as seems to have disappeared from the news quite a bit.

I wouldn't go.

It is still a risk & you shouldn't t go unless you want to risk contracting it unfortunately. Such a shame but maybe somewhere in europe for a nice holiday instead?

Rebeccaslicker · 09/12/2017 12:07

It's all about how much risk you're willing to take. With zika in Barbados I think the odds are tiny - they've had hardly any confirmed cases.

That being said, the outcome if you are that unlucky is so sad that I wouldn't take the risk, sorry. Go next year with the baby and have a fab time!

Flyingfruit - where had you been on honeymoon?

Flyingfruit · 11/12/2017 13:37

Somewhere in South America with a moderate Zika risk! Bloody unlucky, didn’t feel too bad it’s only really dangerous to unborn babies.

I wouldn't risk it personally OP. It's not worth it for a but of sun....

The stuff on gov.uk is what the NHS follow, so go by what it says on there.

I went to Mexico not long ago with moderate risk and was thinking of starting ttc, nhs advice was to wait 6 months after return so I wouldn't risk it if you are pregnant already x

The NHS advice will be not to travel. I spent the first half of my most recent pregnancy living in a zika affected country though and there they are far more relaxed about the risks.
