Folic acid - when to stop?

Hi - I am 14 weeks and was told by community midwife to stop folic acid at 12 weeks. I did this, but since the folic acid I was taking was part of a boots supplement I am worried now I am not getting enough vitamins, iron, etc (feeling rotten this week). Is it ok to start taking a supplement again that has folic acid - they all seem to? I assume it doesn't do any harm?
Thanks

I had Pregaday throughout my first pregnancy- for the Iron. That also has folic acid in it. Did my dd no harm

As far as I know it doesn't do any harm to take it for longer than 12 weeks. Years ago I was prescribed because I'm a vegetarian and I took it every day for a year!

The 12 weeks thing is because that's the crucial stage of the baby's development which folic acid is known to safeguard.

I took Pregnacare throughtout both my pregnancies

I'm not sure how true it is but I was told that Folic Acid throughout the whole pg can help to avoid PE. I also find that all the pg vitamins have it in. As far as I know it can't hurt...

I'm sure folic acid can't harm your baby because they routinely add it to bread in some countries (US I think is one)

Thanks for the advice - you lot should be on prescription for newbies!

I asked my obstetrician this exact question and he said that Pregnacare (folic acid plus multivitamins) can and should be taken throughout pregnancy and indeed until you stop breastfeeding. I'm almost tempted never to stop taking them!

Im 36 wks and still taking pregnacare vitamins and intend to continue through breast feeding if I can??? I looked into taking Folic Acid beyond 12 weeks and there does not seem to be any disadvantage

They say here in the states that any woman of child bearing age should take folic acid everyday. Not that everyone does it, but if it's part of your multivitamin, don't worry.
