Running in Pregnancy

Hello all

Am a little worried as I ran for my train this morning. I had a real heavy feeling. I know it was a stupid thing to do as my mother has already said this morning to me. Would I know by now if there was a problem? This was about an hour ago. No pains.

Oh I am 22+5.

Thanks for advice.

Hi, I'm not a 'runner' myself, but I have read loads of posts on here from people who are keeping up with their running a long way into pregnancy. I'm sure you'll be fine. HTH

Thank you for replying. I am not normally a runner and because i had the heavy feeling it made me panic.

I really wondered when if you have done something that was not necessarily a good idea i.e. running, bashing into a filing cabinet (which I did yesterday!), how would you know if there was a problem and how long would it take? I wouldn't want to go phoning the doctors or midwives for no reason or change in how i'm feeling.

Hi,

You should be fine, I used to exercise very hard (5 days a week) before my pg. I carried on running into my 2nd trimester although it was at a shorter and slower pace. Even now I still workout (despite the strange looks) at 35 weeks. I just make sure that I am not so out of breath that I cannot talk. I do get the heavy feeling you are talking about but I was told it was the extra weight downwards. I wear a maternity belt for support to help this.

The main concern is whether you get enought oxygen to the baby. I find my bump likes the movement and was rocked to sleep initially by it all.

Thank you for reassuring me.

I hope that I am ok then. I don't have any bleeding and would have thought that I would have known by now if there was a problem.

Thanks again

i danced right up until i was 32 weeks with ds1. including capoeira on the concrete floor outside M&S in manchester lol!

They are so protected in their amniotic fluid, try not to worry

How funny! I suppose dancing is just a strenuous as running.

To be honest, I think my mother just "told me off" and it made me worry. I know I won't be going to her for advice if thats the reaction I get!

As I asked before, do you know what symptons would show if there was a problem and how long it would take to start, just so I know for future. Believe me, I won't be overdoing it. Life just cannot stop because I'm pregnant, I am not ill.

In my prepregnant days i was a runner, but due to really bad sickness in first 5 months that came to an abrubt halt! I am now 33wks and ran for a bus the other day - I know what you mean about the heavy feeling.

The baby is just getting jiggled around - in my case I think he stabilises himself by going lower so that he is kind of protected by the hips and pelvis.

Remember baby is cushioned in a lovely bag of fluid so he will just jiggle like jelly! And as for bumping your bump - you may well bruise your self, but your baby will be fine as the impact is cushioned by the fluid.

(I did ask very similar questions to GP /MW / anyone who would listen, as I am quite clumsy!)

Re: symptoms if something is wrong - can't help with that I'm afraid, but generally I think your body would let you know due to some kind of bleeding / leaking / cramping? Wouldn't it? Although, from the moment you find out you are pregnant you will always worry about something!
Also, mothers and MIL tend to scare you with horror stories, urging you to be carefull / rest / eat stuff. I was told to drink milk or my teeth would fall out as the baby takes your calcium! Have you ever heard such nonsense!
