Hello All!

This is my first post, although I suspect it's going to be the first of many as, having got my BFP at the end of January, I have realised that I know absolutely NOTHING about this whole pregnancy/baby lark! Agh! Thank goodness for mumsnet - it's been my most useful source of info to date (she said, sycophantically....)
Anyway, for reasons I won't bore you with, I haven't yet told work I'm pregnant (this week is my first opportunity to do so but having trouble getting to speak to the person in question). Am slightly concerned that I might be starting to show (am 16 +5)as two people have offered me seats on tube in past two days, which is earlier than I expected (no basis for this, though). It did strike me that I might just be fatter than normal, having only really managed to eat junk food for the first ten weeks and, while I'm better now, I still can't really start the day without a couple of biscuits! Hoping it won't be a problem anyway, presuming that I can tell work this week, but just interested to know when you started to show with first pg (I understand it's generally earlier with 2nd?) and if you do show early, do you grow at a similar rate throughout the pg??
In which case, I'm off to find some exercise classes!

I think i was about 16 weeks when i started showing, altough i looked just fat i think for a few weeks then after my 2nd scan,so must have been about 20 weeks, i had a proper bump.

stitch · 18/04/2007 19:32

at 16 weeks my tummy was no longer concave, and had become flat.
i was gutted

stitch · 18/04/2007 19:32

proper bump didnt appear till i was about 7 months

Hathor · 18/04/2007 19:33

Everyone will look pregnant this summer if they are wearing those smock top things.
Depends how fitted your clothes are.
Also, the men probably won't notice until you are due.
The mum's will notice at the first sign of morning sickness.

Hiya and welcome!!

Same here, I was between 16 & 20 weeks I think ... this time around (now 16+1), started to podge out about 5 minutes after bfp! (That's what it felt like anyway!)

Come and join us on the October thread ...

Bodkin · 18/04/2007 19:37

Hello Lacking. Well, I guess it varies pretty much from person to person as to when you actually look "pregnant" rather than just "lardy". I think with both my pg's at about 5 months a proper "bump" started to pop out - although it would be more obvious in the evenings after dinner for some reason - 1st thing in the morning it would be back to "looking a bit chunkier around the middle" A lot of it depends on your body shape - narrow hips and petite - like a football up your jumper from about 3 months, wide-hipped and tall - might not show properly until 5-6 months.

Sorry, pretty vague, but hth. Good luck with the rest of your pg

LackingNicknameInspiration · 18/04/2007 19:56

Wow, that was quick! Thanks very much, looks like I'd best have that chat sooner rather than later.
And am VERY jealous at references to concave/flat stomachs!
Hathor, I also spotted the smocks which I thought was rather handy!
ejt, I probably will come and crash your thread, although should confess to technically being a Sept person - but have looked over there and everyone seems much further down the line than me! This is possibly because I'm due 29th Sep (according to doctor) but on 6 October (according to me, and I'm fairly sure of that!) - so think it's more likely to be Oct than Sep, although presume "it" will just turn up when it wants to anyway!

I'm 17 weeks with no.2 - went to yoga tonight and thought, 'Oh, great, there's a lady the same size as me'. She was 38 weeks. I've been showing since (er...) 12 weeks.

ejt1764 · 18/04/2007 20:52

LNI - again, me too! Doc says I'm due 28th September, I say 2nd October - I'm going with my date, as I know perfectly well when I ovulated!

Come and join us!

Tatat · 18/04/2007 21:29

I'm with stitch, I was 7 months when people noticed. didn't need maternity clothes until then either really, made do with a stretchy hair band looped through my jeans button & hole!

However I never had a concave tummy in the first place (v far from it) so people probably presumed I'd been troughing on the maltesers (they were also right though)

marieg76 · 19/04/2007 09:43

I'm 15+2 and am starting to show - at least a friend has told me that I am.

I was 14wks when my normal trousers stopped fitting.
At 19wks the next size up stopped fitting, at which point I told people at work, who hadnt noticed a thing and were utterly shocked.
At 21wks I turned up for antenatal yoga in my old drawstring trousers and a baggy tshirt and someone said 'You do know this is yoga for pregnancy, don't you?'
And at 23wks I still couldn't convince the cleaner at work I was pregnant at all, let alone 5 months gone, till I showed her the scan pic.
And my maternity jeans still won't stay up without a belt .

I guess if you start out tall and strapping but not fat there's more space between your ribcage and pelvis for the baby to grow without making too much of a bump...

MrsMar · 19/04/2007 12:58

I'm only just starting to show properly at 18 weeks, mind you yesterday I had a midwifes appointment and felt tiny compared to all the women there with their giant bumps!! I can just about fit in to size 16 cords but I can't really sit down in them for long. I think it must vary from person to person, I was never the skinniest person before I got pregnant, so I reckon I've just looked a bit porkier than normal. I think the tautness of your tummy muscles help though, mine aren't too bad and have held everything together a bit. Just say you're loving the smock thing right now if anyone asks and you don't want to tell them the truth

LittleSarah · 19/04/2007 13:02

Not til 7 months really.

MerlinsBeard · 19/04/2007 13:03

it all depends on your size in the forst place, i was a small 6 and 7 stone when i forst got pg. I was only about 12/13 weeks when i started to get a bump rather than just put weight on. DS1 was a really neat bump and you couldn'ttell i was pg from the back!1!

Mandyandbabyboo · 19/04/2007 13:03

I started showing at 15 weeks and ever since then (I am now 31 weeks) it feels like someone every day tells me how huge I am - I am pregnant, what do they expect!! and it is normally from people who have never been pg themselves. Very annoying

maxbear · 19/04/2007 13:04

With my first baby I started to show at about 18 - 20 weeks and looked really obviously pregnant at 22 weeks or so, with my second I started to show shortly after conception (ok slight exaggeration!)but then he ended up being two pounds heavier than his sister.

betsycoe · 19/04/2007 14:02

Hi Lacking,
I'm 16+3 with my first and people have been commenting on my bump for the last week or so. I'm chuffed as I've been very impatient to start showing!

Mum2FunkyDude · 19/04/2007 14:07

around 20 weeks, I think it has to do with your built, if your shorter you might show sooner, I'm quite tall 5'9 and was still in normal clothes almost to 23 weeks.

princessCROComel · 19/04/2007 14:12

Not till 20ish weeks with pg 1 and at about 16weeks with pg 2.

charNbump · 20/04/2007 09:14

i started to show about 24 weeks, but even looking back i think i could've hidden it til about 30 weeks if i'd wanted! You'd never guess looking at the size of me now!!!!!ha!!!!

Good Luck with the pregnancy xxx

SANA · 20/04/2007 09:29
