Smear test whilst pg? Is it safe?

I know I should be asking the doctors, but you guys are mostly more knowledgable!!

I got a letter through a couple weeks back to go for routine smear. I intended to go after my period, then it didn't come, a BFP instead, but now I'm wondering whether I should go and have it done, or wait til baby's born?

A pregnancy book - think it's american, advises most women go for a pap smear once they're pg, but my mum (a nurse) doesn't think that I should whilst pg.

Any experience?

hte nurse should routinely ask you if you are pg, so i guess its a no-no

The practice told me no smear tests whilst pregnant. I was due for mine when pregnant with DS but waited until 5 months afterwards. Unless you are high-risk for cervical cancer, it won't do any harm to wait until after the birth.

no, i wouldn;t , you are supposed to do it at a certain time in the menstrual cycle...

I was due one when I was pg too and it was delayed until after the birth.

I was told not to have my routine smear while pregnant.

I went to the doctors and was told that they wouldn't do it. They said that it was safe but if I had miscarried shortly afterwards, I would have no doubt blamed the smear.

In the US they even do colposcopies on pregnant women.

Smears are routine if you're pregnant there.

Mumpbump · 18/04/2007 14:37

My m/w said not to...

daydreambeliever · 18/04/2007 14:39

yes it is routine to do them whilst preggers in the states, but here its not, the nurse will probably refuse to do it when shes sees your pregnant so youll probably have a wasted trip. happened to me, i was kind of relieved because even tho i know they are safe it would have worried me......

Wow that was quick, thanks puts me at ease now. Feel really guilty when I don't respond to their routine smear letter straight away, now I don't have to.
