Experiences with High AFP Levels

We had the scariest day ever !!! Midwife turned up out the blue at our house and told us that we had to go straight to the hospital for an ultrasound due to our baby potentially having a problem with it's spine. I am 18 weeks pregnant with our first child and my AFP was 15.75 (anything over 2.5 is considered high). We had the ultrasound and they took a detailed look at our babies head, heart, stomach and spine. Luckily they couldn't identify any problem although they were unable to view the very bottom of the spine due to baby's position. Our baby is the correct size for my stage of pregnancy and was moving and kicking about throughout the 30 minute scan. We have been referred to a specialist unit in Cardiff and also have to have monthly fetal growth scans to check the growth of our baby throughout the rest of the pregnancy. I understand that there is a lot of reasons why the AFP levels can be so high but it has all been very scary for us both. who else has had this experience and what was the outcome?
