I am very confused by the whole thing now. I thought the scan would get me excited but I'm just left clueless.

Just to give you a bit of background knowledge.
Had a normal period on 16/1 for the normal 5 days. Had another period on 10/2 which came at the right time but was very very light and lasted 3 days.
MW thought it could have been an implantation bleed so I would be now 14/15 weeks. She said if it wasnt a bleed and just a period I would be now 9 weeks.

Now the scan has put me at 7 weeks and 3 days. So I'm now left wondering if somethings not quite right. If the light bleed was a period why am I not around 9 weeks? Is it because the baby isnt growing properly? I just cannot see how I can be only 7 weeks going on period dates.

They want me back on the 15th May to do a proper dating scan and she said only then will they give me a correct due date.
I did get a picture and you can see the outline of the baby's head and body but it has a tail rather than legs.

Help me!

Im 7 + 3 by my dates.

Nbg · 17/04/2007 14:06

Looks like I'll be joining you on the Dec thread.

misdee · 17/04/2007 14:07

could you have ovulated very late?

JARM · 17/04/2007 14:08

Im due 1st Dec, so we will have to see hun xxx

Hope someone can help though - i would be confused too.

Saying that though, i usually get put back 1-2 weeks from my dates anyway!

Mumpbump · 17/04/2007 14:08

I wouldn't worry too much. At my early 8 week scan, they reckoned I was one week less than I thought I was. By my 12 week scan, they agreed with my dates... I think there is a fairly big margin of error in these scans!

DebitheScot · 17/04/2007 14:09

period dates aren't necessarily conclusive. I thought that they were used with the assumption that the baby was conceived around the 14th day of that cycle as thats when it would normally be conceived. But it is possible to conceive later in the cycle.
ie Period on 10th Feb would normally mean baby conceived on 24th ish so you'd be 9 weeks.
But you could have period on 10th Feb and then not conceive until just before the next period was due. Around the 8th March say. Then you'd only be 7 weeks.

Does that make sense or I am talking rubbish??

Nbg · 17/04/2007 14:10

Well the date they have given me is the 1st too JARM.

When you mean ovulated late misdee, do you mean ovulated just before my light period in feb?

Its just so odd for me to have a very light bleed like that. Have never had one before.

Margin for error is enormous. Was it abdominal or transvaginal? Did you see a heartbeat? Did you see the consultant in the end (read the other thread, I know how nervous you were)?

Nbg · 17/04/2007 14:12

Right, yes thats making sense DTS.
I tested 2 weeks ago and got the quickest and brightest BFP. Never had that with my other 2.

Nbg · 17/04/2007 14:13

Was ultrasound, saw heartbeat flashing away, its 11.1mm long and no didnt see consultant

With dd2 I was absolutley positive of my dates. We worked out, with GP, I was 10 weeks. Scan showed I was 5. PANIC. Went back 2 weeks later to be scanned again to make sure all was ok. I was 5 weeks and all was just fine. As someone has already soon teh margin for error in these things is HUGE.

TeeCee · 17/04/2007 14:14

You saw a heartbeat babes, that's all that really matters aye xx

pucca · 17/04/2007 14:15

NBG...Something similar happened with me when pg with George.

I knew the exact date i got pg as there was only one time i could have got caught. I had my dates so accurate in my head and then got totally confused when i went for my scan. They put me back 9 days, which to me was insane as i knew exactly.

It carried on being the same date they gave me all the way through but funnily enough ds was born 2 weeks early (their date) and was 9lb 6oz.

It is sooooo annoying when they put your date back, with my dd it was fab as they put me forward, but pg long enough without having your dates messed around.

Nbg · 17/04/2007 14:17

I'll admit I am a bit pissed off that I'm not further as that would be nice but just more baffled and confused.

So I could go for this next scan and it could be totally different?

You wouldnt have thought I'd had 2 children would you.

Yes what DTS said, LMP dates assume you ovulate bang on day 14 which very few people do. I know what day I conceived on (DH was away a lot around that time) and they still insisted on going on LMP dates until I had my main dating scan. They then agreed that I ovulated when I said I had, changing my due date very significantly.

ShowOfHands · 17/04/2007 14:19

My first scan was at 7+4, baby had a head, body, tail and heartbeat. Measured 11.2mm!

All sounding very promising!

Nbg · 17/04/2007 14:21

Ahh well then.
Its a bit clearer now anyway.

I think I must be 9 weeks.

Glad you got some help here mate, I have finally got myself an appointment with MW next Thursday.... grrrrrrrrr

Nbg · 17/04/2007 14:27

At least it'll be out the way then JARM.
No more appts for me until I'm 15 weeks.

OP posts:
JARM · 17/04/2007 14:30

i just dont want to go!

I would be happy to just carry on as i am, have 2 scans and give birth - hate all the interventions!

Nbg · 17/04/2007 14:33

I know. Thats exactly how I am with it.
Luckily my MW is coming to me but I've refused any other appts and tests other than antenatal and scans

PinkTulips · 17/04/2007 16:09

hey nbg... sorry your not as far along as you hoped.

they do get these scans wrong though, was it on the tummy or up the fanjo? because on the tummy is notoriously unreliable at this stage

they got ds wrong for sure had him at '38' weeks but he was overdue for sure judging by the state of him!

Nbg · 17/04/2007 18:45

I spoke to my MW not long ago and I told her what had happened.

She said that the early scans are the best!

But she also said about the ovulation thing.

OP posts:
SparklyGothKat · 17/04/2007 19:04

emmm, early scans are best?? I was told when I went for a scan at 6+4 days that I was only 5 weeks, now for me to have been 5 weeks meant that I tested postive 2 days after I concieved I knew exactly when I ovulated, and when I went back last week at 9+6 days (by my dates) The scan showed that I was 9+5 days. So it shows that the early scans can be wrong.

Hopeitwontbebig · 17/04/2007 20:27

Nbq - I had a dating scan early on, my bean measured 9.3mm at the time and they dated me as 7 weeks 1 day. I just thought it was interesting that at over 11mm you are only 2 days further on??? I wonder if there is a difference in the way they work out the dates? Shouldn't be though should there. Also, they did an internal scan which gave a much clearer picture, maybe as it was an abdominal scan you had it wasn't as accurate. HTH
