i just came across this post when i was googling and it really made me feel quite sad for the op. this is what she said.

Hey guys, my name is Bethany and I am really new at all of this.. I just have some questions about what I've been feeling lately.. wondering if you guys could tell me what you think?? I am not good at keeping track of AF, but I know I am VERY CLOSE to starting.. within a week or two...

Feeling:
light headed and dizzy
more of an appetite than usual
I have a constant CM.. more than usual (thick, wet.. it just depends)
I am hungry in the morning (and I NEVER used to eat breakfast)
Weird cramps.. like dull, tickly pain? (don't know how to explain)
Hot flashes at night
A few break out spots
Sore under armpits, outside of BBs..
Running nose, but no cold (only on occasion.. I noticed other people had this posted under their symptoms..)
Nausea- not bad, just a queezy feeling
Constipation

I'm young, never been through this before.. my BF and I have been together over a year.. lately haven't been using protection, although we are "safe" about it.. (I know there is no SAFE.. but he never does it in me..)

that last line did it for me. i know i am no angel, i am 18 with a baby, but i was ob the pill, inever thought i couldn't get pregnant if my bf "didn't do it in me."

then after posting this i wondered if actually i was being a bit judgemental and maybe people do actually use this as a method of contraception on the grounds that if they did accidentally get pregnant it wouldn't be the end of the world?

yeah, they do. My friend and her dh only use this method although their rel. is rocky at best and neither allegedly wants kids right now. I can´t get my head around it either.. It´s easier to believe that deep down they must want kids rather than accept they are actually that stupid.

nappyaddict · 17/04/2007 05:16

i think that too. but then if they really want kids, why are they bothering to withdraw. can't get my head around it!

My mother used it with her last hubby. He was 19 years younger then her & was desparate for kids. She had 4, wanted 3, so wasn't going to have anymore.

She fell pregnant. She aborted it. Even tho he swore to do all the hard work. They weren't together much longer after that.

It was irresponsible in my mother's case, as she knew the risk, she was 40 od, fgs. She knew he was wanting kids. I think she actually loved being in control when she aborted. Her dh's life fell apart & she did noting to help him rebuild it.

suzywong · 17/04/2007 06:10

used it for most of our marriage, had three planned pgs and no accidents

hats off to dh for timing, I think

Blandmum · 17/04/2007 07:38

people use it, they are often called parents. It is very unreliable, suzy is one of the lucky few to have such a talented dh! Plus sperm are lost into the vagina before the man ejaculates, and it only takes one!

If people are using it as a method of 'baby spacing' ie if getting PG wouldn't be the end of the world, then it can be helpful.

If you really don't want to have nother baby, then you should use another, reliable method.

lulumama · 17/04/2007 07:46

'didn;t do it in me' .....as martianbishop has said, sperm do leave the penis before ejaculation...

if you do not really really want another child....go on the pill, use condoms, something other than this method

if another baby would be welcome, then go for it

would maybe be better for couples who are not terribly fertile

also, some couples use it in conjunction with charting their temperature and cervical mucus, so they can be more sure of avoiding the fertile days of the cycle....

seems to me that we still need more education about how you can actually get pregnant, as this was a myth when i was 18 too !!

that last sentence, is not meant to be judgmental, and is a general observation....

FoghornLeghorn · 17/04/2007 08:04

My BF uses thismethod with her DH - they have 2 DS already before they started using this method as she cannot go on pill or coil.
She is 25, has just found out whe is nearly 4 months pregnant and seriously wondered how

Ponce · 17/04/2007 08:07

yikes what woudl scare the lie out of me

nailpolish · 17/04/2007 08:08

yup i used withdrawal

thats how i got dd1 & 2

oops!

LoveMyGirls · 17/04/2007 08:15

we did use this for about 2 years, i wanted a baby, he didnt i said he was free to use condoms but he didnt want to/ like to so i said that was a chance he could take if he wanted.

In the end we planned to start ttc and i got pg straight away (i got pg with dd1 straight away as well but she wasn't planned)

We don't plan on having any more and ive now got the coil.

If we do have any more (not planned) it won't be the end of the world but i'm happy to stay with two.

harpsichordcarrier · 17/04/2007 08:19

it's pretty much a 'Catholic' method, as they are generally opposed to contraception. several of my school teachers used it- and they all had lots of children.

Jacanne · 17/04/2007 09:05

I have to confess that DP and I used to do this on occasion but (and this is a big but) it would never have been a catastrophe if we did conceive just a bit inconvenient at that point in time. We were also never in doubt that it was a bit risky.

multitasker · 17/04/2007 09:15

I had a very regular cycle and was happy to use this method at certain times of the month - I would have been aware of the cervical mucus and ovulation pains mid cycle. However I have to admit I wouldn't have been devestated if I'd got pregnant, but after we had our 3rd I decided to be realistic and got sterilised.

finbarr · 17/04/2007 09:35

myself and dh have used withdrawl for 12 years now - and I have to say in our experience it has worked. I know it sounds stupidly slapdash, but I've never even had a scare for being late, and all 3 pregnancies have been planned, and we conceived the first month of trying each time.
I can't believe it works either though..........

ps possibly TMI, but my BIL and SIL also succesfully use this 'method' - she calls it the 'slippy tits method'

expatinscotland · 17/04/2007 09:35

Yes.

We do.

We're not a very fertile couple and it works fine for us.

kslatts · 17/04/2007 09:43

We have used this method since having dd1 and it has worked for us, we have 2 dd's now and they were both planned, I fell pregnant with dd1 within 6 months (after being on the pill for years) and first month of ttc with dd2. I wouldn't use this method if I was really against having more children though, if I fell pregnant it wouldn't be the end of the world.

SPRAY@slippy tits method

I have to say, and I'm pretty certain finbarr will back me up on this, that it takes a very well disciplined and accurate dh.
And special non-ardour dampening words for "don't come inside!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Victoria72 · 17/04/2007 10:40

My husband and I have been using this method for some 7 years and have never had an accident - he's obviously pretty spot on. I have a DS 5 and am currently 22 weeks pregnant - both of which were planned. However, I would say that if you really didn't want to conceive, other more reliable methods should be used.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 17/04/2007 10:43

My dh wouldn't want to use this method, he says it is too frustrating!

hitchcock · 17/04/2007 10:46

yeah i tried this method and i fell pregant with ds 4yrs ago!!!!! was very difficult as dp didnot want baby and i did , told him i was having baby he came round to the idea and by the 12week scan he was besotted with his unborn baby so worked out for us in the end

We used it, we were really bad at it, I have 4 children . Admittedly we were of the "getting pg wouldn't be the end of the world" category.

It would be too hard now and so I have a Mirena.
