Weight gain in pregnancy

Hello, I wondered how much weight people put on while pregnant.
I weighed myself for the 1st time in ages this morning (I am 22 weeks pregnant) and was fairly horrified to see that I have managed to put on 20lbs already. Does that not seem a lot?
I do have a big appetite, but I eat healthily most of the time. I am not normally overweight, and am worried that I am putting on too much weight. what do you think?

ds1 i put on nearly 4 stone

ds2 just over 1 stone

never ever worry about how much pregnancy weight you are putting on as long as you are healthy and happy and no professional person is concerned, and you are eating well.

you will lose it after the birth

have a happy pregnancy and dont worry!

MrsBadger · 16/04/2007 19:01

even MWs etc don't weigh people in pg any more (so long as they started a healthy weight) - it doesn't tell you anything about how big the baby is or how fast they'll lose the weight afterwards.

Keep eating healthily and avoid the scales!

2 stone with both. Please don't worry, it's impossible to diet when you're pregnant.

JodieG1 · 16/04/2007 19:04

I put on 1 and a half stone - 2 stone with each of my 3.

mumtogusnalbie · 16/04/2007 19:11

Hi - I put on 4 stone with each of my boys and managed to lose it both times.

I have however since put on 2 stone without the excuse of pregnancy and am finder that harder to shift - but thats another story!!

Good luck and don't worry about the weight gain.
xx

i put on 2 stone with ds1 and nearly 5 with ds2! i just felt sooo sick and hungry with ds2 and couldn't stop eating, i wonder if weight gain is linked to how much you weigh to start with, the thinner you are the more weight you put on? i am now 10 1/2 weeks pg with no 3 and have put on less than 1/2 stone.

imo your body tells you what it needs when your pg and you have to obey, even if that is whole cakes and 5 slices of toast and marmite

Hopeitwontbebig · 16/04/2007 19:48

I read on a pregnancy website last night that it's partly due to your genes how much weight you put on in pregnancy. I put on LOADS with DS1 and DS2, am pregnant with DC3 and have been trying to be really careful but have started piling on the weight already

Madigan · 16/04/2007 21:56

Thank you for all your replies ... looks like weight gain seems to vary enormously from one person to the next ... so will try not to worry. Am being a bit vain I think, because don't want to look huge, but I know that a healthy baby is the most important thing.

I asked my MW this the other day and she reckoned the average is about 1.5 stone!!!! Yeah right!! I am 26+4 and have put on about 12lb but thats because I went off food for the first 4 months! I think I will put on about 2st, although the way I am currently eating it will be more like 4! Providing you are still eating sensibly and not using pregnancy as an excuse to 'eat for 2' then whatever you put on is fine. X

PregnantGrrrl · 17/04/2007 09:51

i'm not bothering to weigh. after DS was born i was 2stone heavier than before i had him, and i lost most of it breastfeeding anyway.

BabyMadwithBump · 17/04/2007 10:12

I put on A few lbs in the first few weeks of PG, then I lost that and more due to MS but now I put on about 16 lbs from pre PG and I'm 24+4 weeks, with DS#2 I put on about 2 and abit stone but lost most of it as soon as he was born and lost the rest over the month following his birth, so I really wouldn't worry about it, I wont be with this LO!

BikeBug · 17/04/2007 10:13

I put on 3 stone with ds, and pretty much 14lbs of that was in the last 4-6 weeks. I was the size of a bus. But I've lost all but 7lbs of it now, and I think I would have lost the rest if I was getting decent sleep ever (apparently you don't generate the right hormones or something for weight loss if you never get a good block of sleep...)

Annie75 · 17/04/2007 10:17

Also, don't forget that you have tons more fluid going round your body, your uterus will expand dramatically etc etc - so no wonder you're weighing more than before and that's without accounting for eating more (I had the same level of shock checking out the scales the first time when I thought I'd been pretty healthy).

Read this on babycentre for an explanation of where nearly two stone come from before you've even started pigging out more - made me feel better!

Before pg (19.24 BMI), now 24+3 (21.80) PG and Calculating end PG (24.36) My BMI is fine "healthy weight range" right the way though, so that makes me feel loads better!

naturelover · 17/04/2007 21:53

Just bought bathroom scales and discovered I've already gained a stone (at 21 weeks). Was quite shocked as thought I'd only gained on the bump, and I'm not even showing that much. Am hoping it's all related to genes as my mum shed the baby weight in 10 days after twins! How she did it is a mystery to everyone, herself included, and her weight has been stable and healthy ever since (she's now 60!)

MrsMar · 18/04/2007 11:09

I'm 18 weeks and I've put on about 8lbs. However I did read somewhere that the amount of weight differs according to how much weight you were carrying before you got pregnant. If you were skinny or normal weight before you got pg you are more likely to gain more during pregnancy, and if you are overweight when you get pg you are less likely to gain as much weight. It kind of makes sense to me as I was two stone overweight when I got pg, and I don't seem to have put that much on, despite eating healthily but pretty much what I want (rather than going hungry a lot the time which is what I did when I was a diet crazed non pregnant person!)

cupcake78 · 18/04/2007 11:35

I am 17+4 weeks and lost a stone with MS and have just started to eat again. was horrified this morning to find I have put on 3lbs in the last two weeks and have spent all morning worrying about it but it looks like I am not doing to badly.

charNbump · 18/04/2007 11:53

am 40 wks today and have put on just over 2 1/2 stone but apparently this is totally average so i'm not too fussed. My size 8 jeans won't be being worn for a few months yet tho i feel...........

Kerri28 · 19/04/2007 08:49

I weighed myself this morning after seeing this link yesterday. expected to feel quite smug as have been fairly sick and off most foods therefore not eating much. horrified to find i've put on almost a stone and am 20 weeks and appetite is back with a vengeance!!! goddamn it, how did that happen?!!! didn't help that when i saw my sister for first time since developed a bump (which i thought was nice and small) she said "what sex will the baby be? don't they say it's a boy when you carry all the extra weight on your arse?" gobsmacked wasn't the word, i am obviously far bigger than i thought i was!!!
