Glucose Tolerance Test - advice needed please

I am 30 weeks pregnant and have received a letter to go to hospital on Thursday for a Glucose tolerance test as my reading was high at 28 weeks. Have to fast from 10pm and then have a blood test done at 9.30 am, sit around for 2 hours without moving by the sounds of it and then have another test at 11.30 am.

Has anyone else had to have this - I am a bit worried that something is wrong.

Thanks.

Hi Tippytoes, I had a glucose tolerance test with DS2 because DS1 was a big baby. It turned out to be negative. The test itself isn't too awful, try not to worry too much. Hope it goes well. x

trace2 · 16/04/2007 11:29

yes its only a blood test then given lucazade to drink wait two hours then an other blood test

LilRedWG · 16/04/2007 11:31

Don't worry Tippy. Nothing to it. I had this and did end up with a high result. It just meant I had to watch my sugar intake for the remainder of my pregnancy and test my glucose levels daily.

LilRedWG · 16/04/2007 11:31

Ooo - take a good book with you - that two hours can seem like an eternity!

Tippytoes · 16/04/2007 11:37

Thanks for the replies!

I think I may have been eating too many sweets and chocolate, perhaps this has done it?

Perhaps, but not sure. Try not to worry though. Let us know how you get on on Thursday!

sniff · 16/04/2007 11:42

I have had this done loads I had diabetes with my first two but didnt get it with the last one

If you had just eaten it can effect your urine sample

take something to do and take a sandwich with you because I was starving after i had finished and couldnt wait to get some food

you get first bloods taken then you drink a glucose drink and sit then have more bloods these then get compared

hope it all goes well for you

fishie · 16/04/2007 11:48

i had it because once bmi was over a certain point it is automatic referral [greedy pig emoticon]

glucose drink was not nice and i had to wait an hour before the first test so was there for aeons. take several good books.

Twinmummyx2 · 16/04/2007 14:06

I've had this a few times too-just because 3 rd baby was 10lb...over here, you automatically have one if your deliver a baby over 9 and 1/2 lb....

I had to drink liquid that tasted like melted down lemon sherberts.....first taste was nice...the rest ewwww.

never had diabeties...just big babies.x

LieselVentouse · 16/04/2007 14:34

Nothings wrong you just might have had something in your last sample. I had this and all I can say is it was minging. But everything turned out fine.

Rosetip · 16/04/2007 16:24

I had a glucose test about 3 weeks ago because baby is very large, especially the head (due in June).

There wasn't much to the actual test, and my results came back fine. One thing I would suggest is to make sure that you are provided with the "normal range" figures, otherwise your results are a bit meaningless. I had to look up the range on the Internet as all the midwives told me was that I was fine but I like a bit more information than that.

To be honest, I have eaten far too much chocolate this pregnancy and I did cut down on sugar quite a lot before the test so not sure how accurate the results were. I do feel quite guilty about size of the baby.

MKG · 16/04/2007 17:21

Tippytoes, I'm in the US and here everyone has a glucose screening it's routine. A hint is to not eat too much sugar two days before, not even a banana the night before. Sometimes this can skew the results.

Tippytoes · 19/04/2007 15:50

Had the test done this morning, but haven't had the results yet. Was a lot of waiting around, and you can't go out and do anything, just sit there. I did not want to part with my blood this morning, so ended up with 5 needles in all - 3 in one arm, 2 in the other, before she finally got enough! So other than feeling a bit like a pin cushion, it was ok.

Thanks for all your replies and I will await the results....

Well done Tippytoes and OUCH!!!

tee4two · 19/04/2007 16:00

How I wish I'd seen this thread before today.!!
I had to go for mine this morning, I was taken straight in on the dot and thought 'Ooh, great, I'll be out in no time....'

Then I was informed that I'd have to wait for 2 blardy hours, I had no one with me, starving [nothing to eat since 6.30 last night) and bored rigid. I could have taken my knitting if my useless MW had told me the facts.

Pants...

I have been TOLD i have to have a glucose tolerance test because im overweight. I feel like a freak as it is,the way im being treated is disgusting...they didnt even ask if i WANTED the test just told me thats what im having and i got quite upset. I have no concerns that i will get diabeties and although im overweight my blood pressure is normal and touch wood my baby is fine. Im 4 months now and to be honest they are stressing me out for no reason. Some people might think im selfish for not wanting it done but surely if i feel fine and have no concerns then i should have the right to refuse the test???

mears · 07/05/2007 11:32

hayley1818 - yes you are perfectly within your rights to refuse any test, however it is being advised to ensure that you are not developing gestational diabetes(GD). Do you have glucose in your urine test?

If you develop GD, then your levels of glucose need to be monitored and controlled with diet as increased levels can lead to a baby growing large. Sometimes women actually need to have insulin during pregnancy to control levels.

Babies that grow large can cause problems during the pregnancy and also have problems with their own blood sugars after delivery. That is why glucose tolerance tests are done so that problems can be minimised. HTH
