Blood at 7 weeks :(

Hi all,

Sorry if this is TMI but ill be 7 weeks tomorrlw and since sunday have noticed some pinkish/brown/red discharge. Its only been a small amount but im really worried and wondering if this is normal?

Ive not found anyone very helpful. I called my surgery to tell them i was pregnant last week. They got me to make an appointment with GP. I told him about some bad pain i had a couple of weeks ago in my side and he said just not to worry about it if there has been no bleeding - at which point there hadnt.

Anyway he told me to make an appointment with midwife - who i saw this week and it was just a shambolic experience. I was kept waiting for almost an hr and she wasnt able to give me any advice about bleeding and when i asked what i should do if there was more blood she didnt seem to know whether i should see gp or call her. Finally she said she would check with her manager and give me a call if the manager has any advice about bleeding!

I couldn't freakin believe it. Im maybe expecting too much but i hoped to at least get some advice. Im not seeing her now until end of month for booking in appointment.

Would people recommend getting a private scan? Im feeling really anxious about this and my gut instinct is telling me something isn't right. Its made worse vy thr fact that before sunday i was feeli g sick everyday with bad heartburn but now im not :(

I dont know if i can bare receiving the bad news around xmas and waiting so long.

Also wondering if i do miscarry will thrrr be a sudden rush of blood? I keep sitting at work thinking im gonna get up and there'll be a poolof blood on me :(

Im probably being a bit irrational but im really worried!

Can’t you self refer to a local EPAU?
I would try to avoid paying for a private scan. My experience is that they are often not very good, if there is something wrong they would need to refer you back to the NHS anyway for confirmation and follow up, and it’s pretty galling to pay for bad news.

Thanks Polly -im not sure ive never been pregnany before so don't really know what the process is. I'll google the early pregnancy unit and see if i can self refer

OP I’d be going back to the GP. I am 6 weeks and had a bit of brown blood last Friday. I called my GP who called the EPU and referred me for an early scan. She said that’s just what should happen with any bleeding. I know every area is different but EPU should be able to help you. I had my scan yesterday and all is well. It was most likely implantation blood I was seeing.
Find out if your EPU is self referral or you need a GP to do it and push for scan xx

When this happened to me, I rang my gp and he sent me to the EPU immediately (he phoned ahead to make me an appointment). They need to rule out an ectopic pregnancy. Fortunately all was fine but I continued to bleed up to about 17 weeks. It was really stressful but I’m happy to say all was well in the end.

Hi Veggie, this is so worrying, isn’t it! I can not help you regarding the doctors in the uk, but have some experience with bleeding in pregnancy: first pregnancy, light bleeding basically on and off in the first trimester, once for a whole week. Lived in France, was scanned every time and heartbeat was fine so all good. Baby now 4 years old :) Second pregnancy, light brown bleeding at 6.5 weeks, ended in miscarriage at 7 weeks. Didn’t see a doctor as I was travelling. Back home (this time in Denmark) midwife said nothing could be done anyway. It was like a slightly strongee period, but started very gradually. Third pregnancy, no bleeding, baby now one year old.
I’m Not being very helpful, but just anted to say bleeding really doesn’t need to be the end. When I had the miscarriage, the bleeding became stronger and fresher within days. And while I rationally understand why the Danish health system and maybe the nhs don’t want to spend money on all these scans, because if you are miscarrying, there is nothing you can do, it can be very reassuring to see a heartbeat. I’m not sure whether 7 week’s is too early for a heartbeat though? If it’s too early, a scan might not give you the clear answer you are hoping for. I would probably still try to push for it and even go for a private scan if impossible with nhs and you can afford it. I hope it goes well and you will be reassured soon.

I had the nasty pinky more brown rusty looking blood, really scary looking, my baby is 18 now

Hi Veggie, your EPU should be able to scan you and detect a heartbeat from 8 weeks. I had the same with my first pregnancy and all ended well- like a pp I had bleeding on/off for first 17 weeks- hope you get some reassurance xx

Spotting is really normal at this stage. But it can also be a sign of something wrong. Call triage and get them to check you out.

With my bleeding, I had a scan at the EPU at 5 weeks and they invited me back for another one at 7 weeks to put my mind at rest. They said a heartbeat can be detected at 6 weeks, but just in case dates are out then they wait until 7 weeks when one would definitely be there.
You do need to push your gp for a referral to the EPU to rule out ectopic pregnancy tomorrow, or self refer.

I’m in a similar boat; am 6.5 weeks and have had what I thought was cystitis type pain for two days. My GP checked for UTI yesterday but it came back clear. Have had some pinkish spotting this morning and the GP has referred me to the early pregnancy unit later this afternoon. The nurse I spoke to at the EPU said that because it is less than 8 weeks I would have to have an internal vaginal scan, which I’m dreading bcos of the pain I’m in down there. Any handholding advice from people who have been through this; the nurse has assured me the scan is safe and doesn’t increase the chance of miscarriage but I still feel nervous.

You don't need to be nervous about an internal scan - it won't hurt the baby. I had an internal scan at 6 weeks following a bleed (red blood) the week before. I am pleased to say there was a little heartbeat flickering away.

If you're ever worried do call your GP for advice, or visit the EPU. Try not to worry - it's more likely to be okay than not.

If I was you I'd go back to the GP. I had similar symptoms, but all was fine and my boys are 15 months now :-). Try not to worry, but get checked out just in case x

Hi with my second pregnancy i had a bit of bleeding same as you have described.
I went up to A&E and they did bloods and then a scan and everything was ok. The nurses told me a bit of bleeding it's not uncommon. And as the levels in my blood were ok and scan was fine I was told I was ok and it wasn't a miscarriage.
If I was you I would go to the hospital and have them check you over.

Thanks EastDulwichWife. Scan was fine; hardly felt it (just overly nervous). Baby’s heartbeat was strong, which I was relieved and beyond grateful to hear. Nurses and sonographer were great and put me at ease; my local hospital is rather shabby looking but the staff are fantastic

Don't bother with gp if you have bleeding. Ring your local early pregnancy unit. If you are past 6 weeks they should organise a scan.

This happened to me on several occasions between week 5 and 9 and I was so scared that I booked a private scan which showed that there was no blood in the uterus (so it wasn't coming from the baby) which was a huge relief. The sonographer said it's commonly caused by irritation of the cervix from increased blood volume. I am now nearly 19 weeks. Try not to worry - easier said than done, I know - it's more than likely that everything is fine x

PS My doctor was really unhelpful too when I saw her at 6 weeks. She said I was probably going to miscarry.

This happened to me and I called NHS 24 and they sent my details over to a GP who done a telephone consultation and arranged for me to got to the Early Pregnancy Unit the following day for a scan if you can’t get a GP appointment I would do this

@perditta im really pleased your scan came back well that's brilliant news!!! The local early pregnancy unit wont accept self referrals for first time pregnancy and apparantly wont see me until 8 weeks so i have just bitten the bullet and booked myself in for an early pregnancy scan at locla private hospital. Its early next week so im just keeping everything crossed that it all works out. I havent noticed anymore blood since it happened and i ahve been feeling really tired and off collur again the last couple of days so hoping thays a good sign but it could be hormones. Im so worried but think i have done all crying i can do until next week when i find out for sure :(

Hi OP, I bled in both my pregnancies too. A bit of bright red blood the first time and three weeks of browner bleeding the second time. I had early scans for both though my second didn’t show in his - was convinced I would miscarry but he grew enough to show up on a second scan a week or so later. Hope it’s the same for you and all is well.

@perditta thank you for the msg! I had my scan today amazingly everything was fine!! We saw the baby and it had a strong heartbeat and is looking the right size. It was the most amazing thing ever!

I was so scared because I've had more bleeding today. The doctor said i have a subchorionic haemorrhage which is causing the bleeding and could cause a vit more but said it's absolutely nothing to worry about! Im so relieved...id made up my mind that something bad had happened - just need to try and chill out a bit now and hope next few weeks go smoothly! Thanks all for ur support it really helps as u can't talk to anyone about it yet except my husband! Xx
