dragging pain down back of legs

no one has ever been able to shed any light on this problem and i wondered if any of you lovely ladies ever get anything similar.

i am 16 weeks pg and everytime i have sex i get a really severe dragging pain down the back of both legs afterwards. it can last for up to a day and is agony if i stand still, but fine if i sit down or move about.

i had the same thing with my last pg and the midwife said to go to the gynaecologist if it carried on after giving birth. once i had given birth the only time i got the pain was when i had my period and not after sex. i am sure it is related to my uterus somehow, but no-one seems to know what it is.

i know the simple answer is not to have sex, but i really dont want to do that and this pg i have been getting it slightly at other times too, completely unrelated to sex.

oh, and i know it ISN'T sciatica! which is all anyone seems to say to me!

any ideas anyone?

No idea really, but when I get period pain, on the worst days I get it all the way down the front of my thighs almost to the knees. Spent ages thinking there was something seriously wrong, then one day I got REALLY bad cystitis and had abdo pains with that that ended up spreading down legs in same wasy as period pains. So guess that it's something with the way the muscles work - when some spasm, they all spasm (biological version of Bagpuss?)

do you have varicose veins? I think it may be something to do with poor blood circulation, which is why it helps to sit.

not sure....when i had braxton hicks contractions and early labour contractions they shot down the front of my legs...like a cramping.....i used to ahve it in the first few years of having periods too..but went after that....it might be that, perhaps just braxton hicks contractions.

could it be sciatica?

Hi Greedy,
I went to see my Osteopath yesterday as I've been getting similar pains down my left leg. They are quite sharp pains that start in my left buttock and go down my legs. It is much worse when I suddenly put weight on my leg or get into the car.

Apparently, the pain is being caused by my sacroilliac (SP?) joint (at the back of my pelvis) moving too much due to relaxin. The movement of the joint is causing 'referred' pain down my legs due to pressure on the surrounding muscles and nerves.

Not sure if this is what is wrong with you but it might be worth going to an Osteopath to see what they say. They were much more helpful than my GP and after a few visits (and back clicking) I'm feeling much better.

thanks! trouble is i am a chiropractor and i diagnose that sort of thing to people all the time and i know mine isn't that!
i reckon it is just one of lifes mysteries! the gynaecologist couldn't come up with any suggestions, just kind of said i would have to live with it.
guess i need to accept that and get on with it!
