I hate hate hate swing pregnant women smoke, I literally feel like screaming you selfish twat to them!!!!

I smoked a lot for 10 years and when we started trying for a baby stopped straight away, I fell pregnant straight away and have touched a cig since, currently 37 weeks, I don't even like to be near people that smoke.

Do these silly women not realise it could damage there unborn child!! Yes, in the old days everyone smoked while pregnant but now there is proof it harms a baby why would you even bother.

I saw a women in labour outside the hospital last week smoking a ciggy, takes all my strength not to say something.

Rant over 😂😂

I do admit I've never thought of it from the view of a lot of your ladies posts. To do with depression and it being a coping mechanism.

I still don't agree with smoking whole pregnancy, I've had a lot to deal with but would go near a cig however haven't faced depression so cannot comment on that.

AlexsMum89 · 31/10/2017 22:59

I find it hard to see pregnant women smoking. I really can't see that every one of those is a result of rape or abuse. Some people sadly are just selfish, and I know that first hand. I have known people who very much wanted the baby, but decided they were happy to keep smoking whilst pregnant and around their kids.
Funnily enough, I never said a word because it was not my place, but they were happy enough to comment on my parenting Hmm
Whichever way you look at it, it's sad that it happens and I wish I didnt. Although there's a lot of things out of my control that I wish I could stop or change or help with Sad

WhyTheHeckMe - How are mumsnetters part of the problem out of interest?

Well, you specifically are part of the problem because you choose to post things on a support forum such as Don't care if it's judgemental, I think it's bloody awful and I wish more people were judgemental.

Posting stuff like that might make you feel better but it doesn't help women quit smoking. It gets in the way by making them too ashamed to ask for help. Bully for you if you quit without major problems when you decided to start a family. Many women find it much much harder.

SonicBoomBoom · 31/10/2017 23:02

The stupid crying/laughing emoji and OTT use of !!!!!! makes me want to gouge my eyes out.

PencilsInSpace · 31/10/2017 23:05

guest477337 either post evidence that smoking in pregnancy leads to 'bones not delevloping properly' or shush and stop scaring women.

guest477337 · 31/10/2017 23:05

@SonicBoomBoom sorry about that, please don't gouge your eyes out because of me!!

WhyTheHeckMe · 31/10/2017 23:06

@pencils, I genuinely don't care if it's judgemental

I don't need to say it to make me feel better either lol.

And yeah I must say quitting was the easiest thing I've ever done in my life (not). Was already depressed due to a major change in my life and the champix I was put on to help me quit made me virtually suicidal. So I gave up on all that and went cold turkey. You know why? Because I wanted a family so guess what it wasn't about me anymore!

Choices in pregnancy are things like "hmm should I do pregnancy yoga or not", "should I attend nct classes or not".

Not "hmmm should I quit smoking or not "

Actually you specifically are part of the problem, by defending it! I still am gobsmacked you think it's okay Blush

SonicBoomBoom · 31/10/2017 23:11

Not you, guest!

It seems to be a certain style of posting a new thread that's very common on here at the moment.

catbas · 31/10/2017 23:17

Stress isn't good for babies either apparently just FYI

Greebz · 31/10/2017 23:28

What i really hate is the idea of these poor wee babies being born addicted to nicotine and having to withdraw from it in their first few weeks... What a shit start to their lives. Breaks my heart.

PencilsInSpace · 31/10/2017 23:31

Where did I say it was OK? It's absolutely not OK that over 10% of all pregnant women in the UK have been unable to quit smoking. It's also not OK that everybody treats them like shit on their shoe. Apart from all the other reasons why this is wrong, it doesn't help them quit, it gets in the way.

You don't really give a shit about the number of women who smoke during pregnancy. You don't give a shit about helping them to quit. You don't give a shit about the babies who are not born or who are born with health issues or who die from SIDS. You don't give a shit that those children are far more likely to become smokers themselves - most likely while still children, same as their mothers. You don't give a shit that those mothers have a 50% chance of dying a decade early and an even higher chance of an old age made miserable by ill-health.

If you did genuinely give a shit you'd be doing what you could to help, or at least not actively getting in the way. Those deaths, both of mothers and children, that massive toll of ill health, actually mean nothing to you. Your right to judge is far more important to you and that's why you are part of the problem.

More evidence-free bilge. Are there not enough bad things about smoking in pregnancy without inventing stuff?

You do realise that NRT is routinely prescribed to pregnant women without causing any problems?

Mrstobe90 · 01/11/2017 01:09

I used to struggle with severe breathlessness as a child which the doctor linked to my dad smoking around me constantly.

I understand why some women may feel they can’t quit and a few cigarettes is less harmful than a ridiculous amount of stress but personally I couldn’t smoke while pregnant.

BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried · 01/11/2017 01:41

What do you get OP?

guest477337 · 01/11/2017 02:53

@BatteredBreadedOrSouthernFried sorry what do you meant? What do I get?

Ecclesiastes · 01/11/2017 03:04

I don't understand why people think, "Your baby, your business" and tell you to butt out, but it's not alright to overlook a child's welfare once they're actually born

Because women are not incubators.
Because a foetus is not a person.

A bit less frothing and a bit more thinking would do some of you good.

Newmanwannabe · 01/11/2017 03:55

Yes. Smoking is awful and has many risks. But women are told this at their booking appointments and then make the decision as they what is best for them.

You don't know what else is going on for them. Rather than judging find some compassion

CocoDeMoll · 01/11/2017 04:37

I don't judge really. I've seen many reasons why a pregnant woman might feel she needs to smoke.
I still have a regular (100mls) glass of wine during pregnancy so I'm in no position to judge.

Mummyloves09 · 01/11/2017 07:52

I'm not a smoker however my parents were until their first grandchild was born. My mum never smoked with both her pregnancy.

Just a thought, but if the baby of the smoker was born with smoke related illnesses.
I'm curious to know, would the (smoker)mother be distressed or have a carefree attitude?

The only reason I ask as I knew of someone who had smoked the whole pregnancy and her attitude towards the ill baby, made me question in my mind her initial decision to smoke throughout the pregnancy.

However I am not here to judge as we are all adults and understand there are consequences for our actions.

You never ever know someone's story so don't say a peep or look at them and make them feel any worse they they already do!!

LS83 · 01/11/2017 08:34

I'm not a fan of smoking fullstop but I know the world isn't black and white and you never know I person's story.

Maybe the OP should look back over the 10 years of smoking and realise that she probably wafted smoke in many pregnant women's faces and people who do not smoke. So thank you for your 10 year contribution to passive smoking.

guest477337 · 01/11/2017 08:54

@LS83 I think you'll find I've always been very mindful when I've been smoking as my partner doesn't smoke so I'm aware how it pisses people off. So no I've never blew smoke it a pregnant women's face and wouldn't smoke near non smokers. It's usually in my own back garden nowhere near my house when I did.

CocoDeMoll · 01/11/2017 09:03

op you've changed username so it's difficult to know who people are responding to.

LS83 · 01/11/2017 09:12

ahhhh right! you really are the perfect ex smoker. Congratulations!
