Oh no! Just when i thought I had stopped panicking about things I've noticed something on my 12 wk scan pic. The spine seems to split in two! Does anyone know if this is normal! Could it be Spina Bifida? Did anyone elses look like this too? If anyone has a moment its on my profile page please x

Looks fine to me

If you really are worried, take it to your next mw appointment and ask her to look at it with you.

Puppie · 12/04/2007 12:59

Ta! Am hoping its just paranoia. Have got blood tests coming up next week so will take scan with to ask.

Do you mean the long black bit around the back??
Cos that's outside the baby IYSWIM. It's the Fluid in the sac around the baby. It looks like a normal scan, and your nurse/doc whoever did the scan would've been looking for things like that and would've noticed anything obvious.

dejags · 12/04/2007 13:02

I really think that if the baby had spina bifida then the sonographer would have noticed straight away and referred you for a specialist scan.

Did you get a scan report?

Puppie · 12/04/2007 13:04

No the whitish bit going from bum towards head seems to split into two. Do you know if they look out for things like Spina Bifida as early as 12 wks?

looks normal
the sonographer would have seen anything abnormal.

yes they do.

Puppie · 12/04/2007 13:07

LOL I try to keep it hidden!

did the sonographer give you the scan with notations or did you do that yourself?

PinkTulips · 12/04/2007 13:09

they'll check for SB at the 20 weeks scan... the spine doesn't close til then

keep in mind also that the poicture you're seeing is just images of bounced sound so a single snapshot will be quite difficult to interprete, that's why they spend 20 mins looking at everything from all angles.

Puppie · 12/04/2007 13:10

No I did them myself so I hope it is the spine I've pointed to!

it is

Aloha · 12/04/2007 13:13

Yes, they most definitely do look at the spine at 12 weeks. The neural tube is closed long before 12 weeks (if it doesn't close, this is spina bifida). If there was anything wrong you would have been told. Stop panicking!!!

Puppie · 12/04/2007 13:14

Aaah I guess if the spine doesnt close til then it could very well look a bit odd at the mo'

Puppie, I reckon what you have pointed as the bum is more likely a foot/leg. Slightly in front of it is the other foot/leg. So what you see as a split in the spine is actually lower down the baby, ie 2 legs and not the spine. That's what I think anyway. But if you are concerned, take the picture to your next appt and ask for it to be clarified for you.

PinkTulips · 12/04/2007 13:45

that's the bum alright, you can see the femur heading off to the left.

i think baby just moved as they were snapping it and that's what you're seeing.

something really severe like that would have been picked up on don't worry.

and i was told in both pregnancies that the definitive checking for SB is done at 20 weeks plus. i have SB in my family so it was a concern and with both pregs they did a anomaly scan at 20/21 weeks where they investigated the spine in detail for about 15 mins to check for any sign of a problem.

Puppie · 12/04/2007 13:52

The more I think about it the more it makes sense the pic may have 'wobbled' while she was taking it. If I look at the actual scan I was given its quite clear that it splits and the sonographer did say it was a normal scan so I'm hoping she would have mentioned it if she thought otherwise
